Car hire on São Miguelwhen you need one, the airport desks, deposits and insurance
Hiring a car on São Miguel in 2026: when a car is worth it and when the bus is enough, the seven desks at Ponta Delgada airport, what the deposit and excess really mean in local rental terms, the dirt-road clause, fuel prices and the Lagoa do Fogo summer road closure.

The short answer: you don’t need a car for the whole stay, but you’ll probably want one for a few days. Ponta Delgada works on foot and by bus, and AzoresBus reaches Furnas, Vila Franca, Ribeira Grande and Sete Cidades village (São Miguel without a car). The crater-rim viewpoints, Lagoa do Fogo outside the summer shuttle, Ferraria and the north-east are where a car earns its price. On an island where the cloud lifts and drops by the hour, it also lets you go where it’s clear.
Do you need one?
From a Ponta Delgada base, buses cover Furnas, Vila Franca and (at weekends) Sete Cidades; the crater viewpoints, Lagoa do Fogo outside the shuttle season and bases outside the city are much easier by car. Plan by plan: the Azores without a car.
The desks at Ponta Delgada airport
All seven are before security in the terminal [1]:
| Company | Hours | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Autatlantis | 05:00–24:00 | Azorean, offices on several islands |
| Europcar | 06:00–24:00 | |
| Guerin | 06:00–24:00 | |
| Hertz | 06:00–24:00 | |
| Ilha Verde | 06:00–24:00 | Azorean, office in Ponta Delgada too |
| Sixt | 06:00–24:00 | |
| Wayzor | 06:00–24:00 |
Arriving after midnight? Autatlantis charges €40 for pick-up or return outside its hours [2].
What you need at the counter
- Driver and licence: Autatlantis rents to drivers aged 21–85 with more than one year’s licence, with a €20 a day young-driver fee at 21–23 [3]. Ilha Verde also asks for a licence held for more than a year [4]. EU licences are accepted; some non-EU licences need an international permit or certified translation [2].
- A card in the driver’s name: Autatlantis takes credit or debit (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Revolut), not Maestro, VisaPay or Diners [3]. Ilha Verde blocks a deposit on a credit and/or debit card and puts the amount in your confirmation email [4]. Which cards are common in Portugal, and why you choose euros when the terminal offers your home currency: paying in Portugal.
- Child seats: Autatlantis charges €5 a day, capped at €50 a rental, subject to availability, so ask for the right size when you book [3].
- Extra driver: €4.90 a day at Autatlantis [2].
Deposit, excess and the packs
At Autatlantis the deposit equals the excess of the cover you buy [2][3]; Ilha Verde can also block the unpaid rental and extras, with the total in your confirmation email [4].
- Basic (Autatlantis “Relax”: CDW + theft): you’re liable up to the full excess, and that is the deposit [3].
- “Super Relax”: adds super CDW, windscreen, tyres and wheels; lower excess and deposit [3].
- Top pack: advertised with zero excess and deposit, plus assistance and personal accident cover [3].
Basic CDW excludes damage under the car, windscreen, wheels, tyres, clutch and gearbox [2]. Speeding, drink or negligence voids the cover entirely [2]. Ilha Verde’s no-show or late-cancellation fee (under 48 hours) is up to €59 [4].
Rules of the road
- Speed: 50 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside for cars, unless signs say otherwise [5].
- No dirt roads: both local firms forbid unpaved, gravel and forest roads and beaches, even when a GPS routes you there [2][4].
- Same island only: Autatlantis doesn’t recommend taking a car between islands and wants it back on the island where you rented [3].
- Fuel: Azores fuel has regional maximum prices. From 1 October 2026: petrol 95 up to €1.924 a litre, diesel €1.939, VAT included; the government resets them every month, so check before you go [6]. Under full-to-full terms both local firms charge a refuelling fee if you return it less full; Ilha Verde also sells a prepaid tank [2][4].
- Lagoa do Fogo: from 1 August to 30 September and at Easter the road between the Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água car parks is closed to private cars; an €8 shuttle runs instead [7].
- The national rules: alcohol limits, phones, child seats, fines and what must be in the car are in driving in Portugal. That guide is written for the mainland: its toll and Lisbon sections don’t apply here, and it doesn’t cover the Azores’ roads.
If you’d rather not drive
Use the bus for the routes that work and book a tour for Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo on the other days (without a car). For whale trips you don’t need a car either: boats leave from Ponta Delgada marina (whale watching).

Quick answers
Do you need a car on São Miguel?
Not for every day. From a base in Ponta Delgada, AzoresBus reaches Furnas, Vila Franca do Campo, Ribeira Grande and Sete Cidades village. A car pays off for Lagoa do Fogo outside the summer shuttle, Ponta da Ferraria, the north-east, the viewpoints above Sete Cidades and for chasing clear weather. Consider hiring for two or three days rather than the whole stay.
Which car hire companies are at Ponta Delgada airport?
The airport lists seven desks before security: Autatlantis (05:00–24:00), Europcar, Guerin, Hertz, Ilha Verde, Sixt and Wayzor (06:00–24:00). Autatlantis and Ilha Verde are Azorean companies.
Can you rent a car in the Azores with a debit card?
Some local firms accept it. Autatlantis says it takes credit or debit cards in the driver's name (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Revolut) for the deposit, but not Maestro, VisaPay or Diners. Ilha Verde asks for a credit and/or debit card authorisation and states the amount in your confirmation email. Check the exact rule for your booking.
How big is the deposit?
It depends on the cover you choose. In Autatlantis' terms the deposit equals the excess of the insurance pack: highest with basic CDW and theft cover, lower with Super Relax, and its top pack is advertised with zero excess and deposit. The amounts are in the company's current insurance table, which we did not find published as a fixed figure.
Can I drive on dirt roads?
Not under the usual contract. Both local firms we read forbid unpaved or badly damaged roads, beaches, forest tracks and gravel roads, and Autatlantis adds roads unsuitable for traffic even if your GPS sends you there. Damage underneath the car, tyres and windscreen are excluded from basic cover.
