The short answer: you can go any month, and for the big baleen whales go in spring. Sperm whales feed and calve around the Azores all year; blue, fin and sei whales stop here to feed during their spring migration and have been detected acoustically in autumn and winter too [3]. Boats leave from Ponta Delgada, Vila Franca do Campo and Rabo de Peixe, trips last about three hours, and adult tickets cost €65–78 [5][6][7].

What you might see, by season

Season What the sources say
All year Sperm whales (present year-round; feeding and calving ground), common and bottlenose dolphins [3][4]
Late winter to spring Blue, fin and sei whales on migration; Visit Azores says blue whales are “easily spotted at the end of the winter” [3][4]
Summer Spotted dolphins more common [4]
Autumn and winter Trips still run [4]; baleen whales detected acoustically, so sightings are possible but less likely [3]

Visit Azores claims whales or dolphins are seen on 98% of trips [4]. That’s the tourism board’s figure, not an independent count; operators back it with “sightings guaranteed” offers of a free repeat trip [5][6].

Operators on São Miguel (the ones we read)

Operator From Boat Adult Children
Futurismo Ponta Delgada marina Catamaran or Zodiac €70 + €4.20 online fee [5] Zodiacs from 6; operator lists 50% off for ages 6–12 [5]
Futurismo north coast Rabo de Peixe Zodiac or catamaran from €65 on its north-coast site; futurismo.pt lists the same trip from €70 [6] 6–12 €32.50, under 6 free; catamaran recommended [6]
Terra Azul Vila Franca do Campo marina Zodiac €65 Oct–Mar, €78 Apr–Sep [7] €45 / €54; not under 4 [7]
Picos de Aventura Ponta Delgada marina Catamaran (the site also lists a semi-rigid speedboat and a fibreglass boat) €74.90 catamaran, 12+ [9] 6–11 €37.45, 0–5 free [9]

Terra Azul’s five boats hold the 2026 Blue Flag for eco-tourism vessels, the only ones in the Azores on that list [10]. Its trip ends with a 15-minute loop round the Vila Franca islet [7].

Zodiac or catamaran with kids

  • Zodiac: faster, closer to the water, a bumpy ride. Futurismo’s minimum age is 6 [5]; Terra Azul says not under 4, not for pregnant passengers or anyone with back problems [7].
  • Catamaran: Futurismo recommends it for children and seniors [6]; Picos de Aventura sells child tickets from age 6 [9].

Terra Azul’s advice: eat light, bring water, sunscreen and a warm layer [7].

The rules boats must follow (and you can watch for)

Whale watching in the Azores is licensed by the regional government, and the law sets how boats behave [1][2]:

  • Within 500 m of a whale or dolphin a boat is “approaching”: it moves parallel and slightly behind the animals, leaving them 180° clear ahead, and no faster than they swim plus 2 knots [1].
  • Never closer than 50 m to any cetacean; 100 m from whales with small calves; no approaching calves alone at the surface [1].
  • Maximum 30 minutes inside the 500 m zone; with whales and several boats, 15 minutes per boat, then it leaves. No more than three boats within 300 m of a group, and within 500 m of whales [1].
  • If animals keep avoiding the boat or show signs of disturbance, the boat must leave from behind; no splitting groups or separating calves, and no staying within 500 m of animals resting or giving birth [1].
  • If animals come closer than 50 m to a drifting boat, the engine must be in neutral [1].
  • No swimming with whales. Dolphin swims only from licensed boats with an extra crew member watching the swimmers: two swimmers at most, within 50 m of the boat, 15 minutes, three attempts per boat, no touching [1]. Legal isn’t the same as harmless: the law’s own list of disturbance signs is a reason to skip the swim if the dolphins keep moving away.
  • No feeding, no sonar, no night trips [1].

In 2025 the government added licences for two of the whale-watching zones and capped boat length at 30 m [2]. Terra Azul shows RNAAT 131/2015 and Picos de Aventura RRAAT 03/2007 on their sites [8][9]; those are tourism-operator registrations, not the specific whale-watching licence, so ask for that too.

Practical

  • Book for a calm day early in your stay, so a cancelled trip can move. Sea conditions decide [4].
  • Combine with the islet at Vila Franca from June to mid-October (Vila Franca do Campo).
  • No car needed: Ponta Delgada’s marina is in town. AzoresBus line 315 runs directly from Ponta Delgada (Alfândega) to Vila Franca do Campo (Terminal) in about 50 minutes on the published all-year departures; check your day and the return journey in the official PDF [11] and without a car.

Quick answers

When is the best time for whale watching in the Azores?

Trips run all year. Sperm whales feed and calve around the islands year-round, while blue, fin and sei whales use the Azores as a feeding stop on their spring migration, which is when the big baleen whales are most likely (IMMA factsheet). Visit Azores adds that spotted dolphins are more common in summer. At Terra Azul, October to March trips are cheaper; in any month the sea decides whether boats go out.

How much does whale watching cost on São Miguel?

On the operators' sites in October 2026: Futurismo €70 per adult from Ponta Delgada (+€4.20 online fee) and from €65 from Rabo de Peixe (children 6–12 €32.50); Terra Azul in Vila Franca €65 adult and €45 child from October to March, €78 and €54 from April to September. Trips last about 3 hours.

Can young children go whale watching?

It depends on the boat. Futurismo takes children from age 6 on Zodiacs and recommends its catamaran for children; its Rabo de Peixe trip is free under 6. Terra Azul runs Zodiacs and says its trips are not for children under 4, pregnant passengers or people with back problems.

Can you swim with whales in the Azores?

No. Azorean law prohibits swimming with whales. Swimming with dolphins is allowed only from licensed boats, with at most two swimmers in the water at a time, within 50 m of the boat, for no more than 15 minutes, and without touching the animals.

How close can boats get to whales?

Not closer than 50 m to any cetacean, and not within 100 m of whales with small calves. Inside 500 m boats may stay a maximum of 30 minutes, approach from behind and to the side, and no more than three boats may be near the same whale or group.
