In detail
Vila Franca do Campo is a small town on São Miguel’s south coast, about 23 minutes’ drive or 50 minutes by bus east of Ponta Delgada. Most visitors come for the islet just offshore, a sunken volcanic crater with a ring of sea water inside where you can swim in summer. The town also has Blue Flag beaches, including Vinha d’Areia and Água d’Alto, a marina with whale-watching boats and the queijadas, small sweet cheese pastries.
Vila Franca charges €2 per guest per night for up to three consecutive nights per establishment (half rate at campsites); under-13s pay nothing [3]. Other towns’ rates: tourist tax in Portugal. For how it compares with Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande and Furnas, see where to stay in the Azores.
Numbered references match the source list on this page. All read on 9 October 2026.
AzoresBus line 315 takes about 50 minutes from Ponta Delgada (Alfândega). On the October 2026 timetable there are 9 departures on weekdays all year between 07:00 and 19:00 (11 to 12 on school days, 10 in the school holidays), four on Saturdays and three on Sundays; the last weekday bus back reaches Ponta Delgada at 19:34. Line 318 to Furnas also stops in Vila Franca.
The regular summer boats are scheduled from 12 June to 11 October in 2026. Outside the bathing season the access regulation allows smaller visits (160 people a day, 40 at a time) on the marked trail for up to 1 h 30, and from 15 October to 15 November the upper areas can be closed while shearwater chicks are present.
The regulation sets a €4 conservation fee per visitor (Azores residents exempt), collected through the boat ticket. We could not see the boat fare itself on the official ticket site without starting a purchase; online tickets carry a 15% service fee plus VAT on that fee that is not refunded.
For drivers who want the south coast, possibly: Ponta Delgada is about 23 minutes away and Furnas is further east on the same road. Without a car it is quieter in the evening, with the last line 315 bus to Ponta Delgada at 18:45 on weekdays, 20:15 on Saturdays and 16:30 on Sundays (October 2026 timetable).
