Azores for digital nomadscoworking, internet, costs and a realistic month on São Miguel

Working from São Miguel in 2026: four coworking options (two in Ponta Delgada, one each in Lagoa and Ribeira Grande), available prices, internet, laptop cafés and their limits, living costs, time zone, and a visa link.

The short answer: São Miguel works for a calm, nature-heavy month of remote work, with a small but real coworking choice and no big nomad scene. Base yourself in Ponta Delgada for buses and services; the cheapest published desk is 10 minutes away in Lagoa (Nonagon, €18 a day) [1]. Expect decent but unmeasured internet, a handful of laptop cafés in Ponta Delgada, and a time zone one hour behind London.

Where to work

Space Where Day Month Notes
Nonagon Lagoa tech park €18 €70 or €170, annual contract Free trial month; office hours Mon–Fri; VAT not stated [1][2][13]
CEmpA Ribeira Grande €30 + VAT (“Nómada”) €100 + VAT (annual contract) [3] Internet “up to 1 giga” (operator) [3]
unOffice Ponta Delgada check with operator check with operator Accommodation packages were previously listed, but live prices could not be read on 14 Oct 2026 [4]
ONE Solmar Ponta Delgada seafront on request on request Open space, 24/7 for monthly members [5]

Cafés

Laptop cafés are few here, and a 2026 nomad guide says the same: “You won’t find a lot of laptop-friendly cafes” [21]. In Ponta Delgada we found four with at least some evidence that laptops are fine; elsewhere only cafés that advertise Wi-Fi. Treat all of them as a change of scene for an hour or two, not your office.

Café Town Evidence (source, date) Limits
Cascara Ponta Delgada “Laptop Friendly” and free Wi-Fi labels on European Coffee Trip (modified 5 Oct 2026) [6] Closed Mon–Tue; little seating inside, queues on Sundays [14]
Jardim Natural Food & Coffee Ponta Delgada Remote-work account: “ideal for working remotely from” (Oct 2025) [15] Limited seating, brunch crowd; go on a weekday at opening [14]
Louvre Michaelense Ponta Delgada Nomad HQ (Sep 2026): relaxed about laptops off-peak; free Wi-Fi in listings [17] Off-peak only; bistro service; hours differ between sources
Café Central Ponta Delgada Listed among cafés “tried and tested” for work (guide from 2022, updated Sep 2026); free Wi-Fi in listings [16] Café-restaurant on the main square, busy at meal times
Snack Bar Pizzaria Primavera Ribeira Grande Own website: free Wi-Fi, A/C, from 07:30 [18] Wi-Fi only, no laptop evidence
3 Bicas Furnas Own website: free Wi-Fi, daily 09:00–00:00 [19] Small snack bar, Wi-Fi only
Café Aliança Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira) Free Wi-Fi listed for the café & hostel [20] Busiest café in town, no laptop evidence

Not for laptops: AMOR.A Cake & Coffee in Ponta Delgada, “No laptops are allowed” [14]. Coffee Roasters Intz48 isn’t listed with Wi-Fi [6]. We found nothing to recommend in Vila Franca do Campo. Opening hours in Ponta Delgada are short and many cafés close one or two days a week, so check before you go.

Internet and phone

  • Speed: nomads.com’s crowd-sourced average for the Azores is 45 Mbps (updated 9 October 2026) [7]. Coworking operators advertise fibre (“up to 1 giga” at CEmpA, “1Gbps” at unOffice); those are their claims [3][4].
  • Home broadband: Numbeo’s contributors put a 60 Mbps+ home plan at about €38 a month in Ponta Delgada [8].
  • Mobile: EU plans roam at home prices. We found no independent coverage data for the island’s interior. eSIM options: Portugal eSIM guide.

What working here costs

  • Desk: from €18 a day or €70 a month on an annual contract at Nonagon; prices for the other spaces are in the table above [1][13].
  • Coffee while you work: cappuccino about €1.60 (Numbeo, low confidence) [8]. Cards and Multibanco: paying in Portugal.
  • Getting to a desk: check current routes and fares on AzoresBus [12]; most people add a few days of car hire.
  • Rent: the biggest cost and the most variable; signed rents, platforms and the lease are in Azores monthly rentals.

Time zone and getting here

  • UTC−1 in winter, UTC+0 in summer: one hour behind Lisbon and London, usually two behind Central Europe [10].
  • Ryanair left the Azores on 29 March 2026; mainland flights are now Azores Airlines and TAP [11]. Details: flights to the Azores.

Visa and insurance

EU citizens don’t need a visa. Everyone else: Portugal’s digital nomad visa (the Azores are Portugal) and insurance for digital nomads. What the EHIC covers here, and what you pay without it: healthcare in Portugal for travellers.

Quick answers

Are the Azores good for digital nomads?

For nature and a quiet month, yes; for a big nomad scene, less so. We found four coworking options on São Miguel, two of them in Ponta Delgada, and crowd-sourced internet averages around 45 Mbps. Cafés where people work are few: we found four in Ponta Delgada with some evidence of laptop work, and only Wi-Fi cafés elsewhere. Flights became fewer after Ryanair left in March 2026.

How much is coworking on São Miguel?

Nonagon in Lagoa lists day access at €18 (2026 price list, VAT not stated) and a free trial; its €70 and €170 monthly plans are annual contracts. CEmpA in Ribeira Grande lists a €30 + VAT day plan and €100 + VAT monthly coworking on an annual contract. Check current prices and tax at booking. unOffice in Ponta Delgada lists packages with accommodation; ONE Solmar gives prices on request.

What time zone are the Azores in for remote work?

UTC−1 in winter and UTC+0 in summer, one hour behind Lisbon and London all year, and usually two hours behind Central Europe. A 09:00 call in Berlin is 07:00 in Ponta Delgada; a 09:00 call in New York is 13:00 in winter.

Can you work from cafés in the Azores?

For an hour or two, in Ponta Delgada. Cascara is listed as laptop-friendly, Jardim Natural is recommended by a remote-work account, and Louvre Michaelense is described as relaxed about laptops off-peak; AMOR.A Cake & Coffee does not allow laptops. In Ribeira Grande, Furnas and Angra we only found cafés that advertise Wi-Fi, with no evidence on laptops. For a workday, book a coworking desk.

Do I need a visa to work remotely from the Azores?

The Azores are part of Portugal, so EU and EEA citizens can stay and work freely; others need to look at Portugal's digital nomad (D8) visa. See our guide to Portugal's digital nomad visa.
