Azores with kidshot springs, whales, rainy-day plans and doctors on São Miguel
São Miguel with children in 2026: hot-spring prices and age bands, parks and pools, whale boat age limits, free and rainy-day options, seasonal sites, and paediatric urgent care.

Selected operator prices and hours rechecked on 14 October 2026. Age bands differ by place (under 6, under 7, under 12, under 15). Check current conditions before visiting.
The short answer: São Miguel works for active families who plan around warm pools rather than beach days, and around the weather rather than a fixed itinerary. The best-value family stops have child prices or are free: Caldeira Velha (free under 7) [1], the Furnas caldeiras (free under 12) [5], Gorreana tea fields (free) [11], Parque Século XXI [6] and the regional museum (free up to 14) [8]. Base yourself in Ponta Delgada if you want services close by.
Hot springs by age and price
| Place | Children | Adults | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caldeira Velha | 0–6 free, 7–14 €5 | €10 | 1½-h slots; under-13s with an adult; check the operator’s latest pool status [1] |
| Terra Nostra | 6–17 €14.50 | €17 | Water 38–42 °C, max 30 min advised; 10:30–16:30 [2][20] |

Terra Nostra advises no more than 30 minutes in the hot pool and asks adults to supervise children at all times [20]; check each operator’s rules. More detail in Azores hot springs.

- For the family sights beyond Furnas and Vila Franca, a car is the practical choice: São Miguel without a car.
Doctors and hospitals
- Emergency: 112.
- Advice by phone: the Azores health line, 808 24 60 24 (Linha de Saúde Açores). The mainland SNS 24 number is not the one to use here [23].
- Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, Ponta Delgada (public): the modular hospital has emergency services for adults, children and pregnant women [21]. Its current page says non-urgent children older than 18 months are referred to the USISM urgent-care service between 08:30 and 20:30 [21]. For an emergency, call 112.
- Hospital CUF Açores, Lagoa (private), Alameda do Conhecimento 3, 10 minutes’ drive from Ponta Delgada: children are seen on weekdays only, 10:00–17:00; adults daily 08:00–22:00 [16]. Check before you go.

Travel insurance for long stays
A European health card (EHIC, or the UK’s GHIC) covers state healthcare, not everything. For a long stay, check whether a policy covers you for the whole trip, pre-existing conditions, and sports like surfing. We don’t sell or recommend specific policies.
Weather with kids
Average humidity is around 80% in every month [19] and rain comes all year. Pack layers and rain gear even in summer; see Azores weather by month.

Quick answers
Are the Azores good for kids?
For families who like being outdoors, they can be: warm thermal pools with child prices, crater lakes, whale trips, tea fields and short walks. The catches are the weather (rain in every month, about 80% humidity), few lifeguarded sandy beaches outside summer, and a car for many of the sights. Ponta Delgada has the parks, pools and services.
Can children go in the hot springs in the Azores?
Yes, at the main ones, with different age bands. Caldeira Velha: free under 7, €5 for 7–14 with bathing, under-13s must be with an adult. Terra Nostra: €14.50 for 6–17; check with the operator for under-6s. Poça da Dona Beija: 7–17 pay the adult €12, 2–6 €10, under 1 free; evening slots from 18:00 cost €16 and €14.
What is the minimum age for whale watching in the Azores?
It depends on the boat. Futurismo in Ponta Delgada takes children from 6 on its Zodiacs and lists a 50% discount for ages 6–12; its catamaran is the gentler option. Check the operator's current age limits, child fare and online booking fee before paying.
What can you do with kids in the Azores when it rains?
In Ponta Delgada, the Museu Carlos Machado (free for children up to 14, and for everyone on Sundays) with a natural history circuit; in Lagoa, the Expolab science centre (Tuesday–Friday 10:00–17:00, Saturday 14:00–18:00). Warm pools can work in light rain, though Terra Nostra and Caldeira Velha may close in bad weather.
Where is the children's hospital on São Miguel?
In an emergency call 112. The public Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada was damaged by a fire in May 2024. Since 3 September 2024 its emergency service for adults, children and pregnant women now runs from the modular hospital on the same campus. For advice, call the Azores health line, 808 24 60 24 (not the mainland SNS 24 number). The private Hospital CUF Açores in Lagoa (Alameda do Conhecimento 3) sees children only on weekdays 10:00–17:00; adults daily 08:00–22:00.
