Christmas and New Year's Eve in Madeira 2026lights, Market Night, fireworks and where to stay
Christmas and New Year's Eve in Madeira from official sources: December weather, Funchal's lights and market, the dawn Missas do Parto, Market Night on 23 December, the fireworks and where to watch, buses on 31 Dec and 1 Jan, hotels and kids.

Checked on 11 October 2026. The season’s dates, the Christmas market, the Christmas Village, the dawn masses and the fireworks are listed for 2026. Funchal council’s own Christmas programme, the Market Night line-up, the traffic notice and the cruise list for 2026 were not yet announced as of 11 October 2026; where we give those details, they are marked as 2024 or 2025. Recheck the official programme before you travel.
The short answer: Christmas in Madeira is a festive season the islanders call “A Festa”, running from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, and it ends the year with an eight-minute fireworks display over Funchal bay at midnight on 31 December [1][2][4]. December on the south coast is mild and showery: Funchal averages 21.0 °C by day and 15.5 °C at night, with about 9 rainy days in the month [34]. The highlights are the lights and the Christmas market in central Funchal, the dawn Missas do Parto from 15 December, Market Night around the Mercado dos Lavradores on 23 December and the fireworks, which you can watch for free from anywhere with a view of the bay [1][4][29]. Book a bed early: in the hotel association’s December 2025 survey, Madeira reported a 79% booking rate for the New Year period, the highest in Portugal [12].
Madeira in December: the weather
| December in Funchal | |
|---|---|
| Average high | 21.0 °C |
| Average low | 15.5 °C |
| Rain | 94.8 mm |
| Rainy days (at least 1 mm) | 8.6 |
| Sunshine | about 5 hours a day |
| Sea (offshore Funchal) | 19.9 °C |
High, low and rain are IPMA’s 1991–2020 normal for Funchal; sunshine is averaged from IPMA readings published by DREM for 2012–2025 [34][35]. Sea temperature is NOAA OISST v2.1 Final for 2001–2020 at the offshore grid point 32.625° N, 16.875° W [36][37]. We averaged daily sea temperatures within each December, then averaged the 20 annual December means equally and rounded to 0.1 °C. This offshore average is not a measurement at every beach or swimming pool. Full monthly figures: Madeira weather by month. December is Funchal’s wettest month on that normal, and the hills and the north are cooler and wetter than the city, so pack a rain jacket and a warm layer for evenings outdoors and anything above the coast. January, February and the mountains in winter: Madeira in winter.
Christmas in Madeira: 1 December to 10 January
The festive season runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027 on the regional calendar [2][3]. Visit Madeira says the island calls the whole season simply “A Festa”, the festivity [4].
What is listed for 2026, and what isn’t yet. The Christmas market, the Christmas Village, the Christmas workshops, the Missas do Parto and the New Year’s Eve show all have 2026 dates on the regional events site [1][5][6][29]. Funchal council also publishes its own programme (“Natal no Funchal”): the 2025 one came out on 28 November 2025 [24]. We found no 2026 programme in the council’s news on 11 October 2026, so treat it as not yet announced as of 11 October 2026 [31]. The listing for the lights switch-on still showed the 2024 edition [30].
Lights, the Christmas market and the nativity scene
- Christmas lights: Visit Madeira says Funchal lights up at nightfall on 1 December, along the main avenues and on churches and public buildings [4]. The exact switch-on time for 2026 is not yet announced; the 2024 edition was listed for 1 December at 18:00 [30].
- Christmas market: stalls on the central walkway of Avenida Arriaga, from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, with bolo do caco, vinha d’alhos sandwiches, poncha, Madeira wine and seasonal sweets, and music several times a day [4][5].
- Ethnographic Village and the giant nativity scene at Largo da Restauração, next to the market [4].
- Christmas workshops, free, next to the stage on Avenida Arriaga, 2 December 2026 to 8 January 2027 [6].
Funchal council’s programme (2025 as an example)
The council’s 2025 programme ran from 3 December 2025 to 6 January 2026 with 12 events [24]. The 2026 programme is not yet announced; this is what the 2025 one included:
- Christmas Village on the municipal square (Praça do Município), opened on 5 December 2025 with Santa’s arrival; the Christmas train ran 11:00–13:00 and 15:00–19:30 [24]. For 2026 the regional listing gives 4 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 [6].
- An eco nativity scene in the town hall atrium, weekdays 9:00–17:30 [24].
- “Natal na Praça” at the Mercado dos Lavradores on the first three Sundays of December, 9:00–20:00 [24].
- Volta à Cidade, the city’s traditional road race, on 28 December at 18:30 [24].
- Epiphany singing (“Cantar os Reis”) on 5 January 2026 at the Penteada market and on 6 January 2026 at the Christmas Village, with hot chocolate and bolo-rei [24]. The regional listing has the Chants of the Epiphany on 5 January 2027 at 19:00; the official pages disagree on the venue (Praça do Povo or the Municipal Gardens), so check the final programme [3][6].
Missas do Parto: Christmas at dawn
The Missas do Parto (“Childbirth Masses”) are nine early-morning masses before Christmas, one for each month of Mary’s pregnancy [4]. The 2026 listing runs from 15 to 23 December, from about 6:00, at Funchal’s Sé Cathedral and in parishes in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Machico, Ribeira Brava, Santana and São Vicente [29]. Visit Madeira says some parishes start around 5:00, and in some places groups walk from house to house singing on the way to church [4]. After mass the party moves to the churchyard: music on braguinhas and accordions, hot chocolate, vinha d’alhos sandwiches and homemade liqueurs, sometimes until sunrise [4][29]. In 2025 Funchal council’s own Missa do Parto was on 19 December at 07:00 at the Igreja do Colégio [24].
The gathering follows a religious service, so check the start time with the parish (each church sets its own) and treat the mass itself accordingly [29].
Market Night (Noite do Mercado), 23 December
Market Night falls on 23 December by tradition (a Wednesday in 2026). Visit Madeira describes the streets around the Mercado dos Lavradores closing to traffic and becoming an open-air market of fruit, flowers, Christmas sweets and drinks, with thousands of people out for last-minute shopping and to meet friends [4][27]. The tradition at its heart is the carol singing inside the market, which Visit Madeira describes as more than an hour of carols [4].
- What it looked like in 2024: traditional groups played in the streets from 19:00 to 04:00, the Confraria dos Cantares sang carols at the Praça do Peixe (the fish market hall) from 23:00, a headline act went on the outdoor stage at midnight and a DJ played from 01:00 to 04:00 [25].
- 2025: the council auctioned 24 stall spaces on Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas, Rua Dom Carlos I and Casa da Luz, the carols were again at the Praça do Peixe, and the city filled “through the day and night” [26][27]. Cleaning crews worked overnight and started on the centre at 06:00 on the 24th [28].
- 2026: date fixed by tradition (23 December), programme not yet announced as of 11 October 2026 [31].
It is a late, crowded night out. With children, the early evening is calmer than the hours around the carols and midnight; that’s our suggestion, not an official one.
Christmas Day and after
Christmas Day has the least public transport of the season: in 2025 none of the three bus operators ran on 25 December (Horários do Funchal, Rodoeste’s regular service and CAM), and the Horários do Funchal and CAM ticket offices were closed [11]. The Funchal–Monte cable car doesn’t run that day (cable car page). In 2025 the bus operators also treated 26 December as a public holiday [11]. Plan 25 December around your hotel, a walk on the seafront or a pre-booked meal.

The New Year’s Eve fireworks
| What the official sources say | |
|---|---|
| Date and time | 31 December 2026 (a Thursday), listed from 23:59 to 00:15 [1] |
| Length | About eight minutes [1][7] |
| Launch stations (current listing) | 58: 26 on the hillsides around the city, 25 along the harbour at Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis, 5 at sea, 2 on Porto Santo [1] |
| Size (2025 show) | 22 tonnes of fireworks, 97,000 shots [7] |
| Record | Guinness World Records’ largest fireworks display for New Year’s Eve 2006–2007, a title it held until 2012 [4] |
The events page, last edited in January 2026, already carries the 2026 date [1]; the 58 stations match the 2025 news reports [7], and the final 2026 layout is still to be confirmed.
Where to watch
Funchal is built like an amphitheatre around the bay, and the launch stations follow it [1], so look for a public spot with an unobstructed view of the bay. The trade-off is between being close and seeing the whole bay. Access to some spots can change on the night, so check the 2026 traffic notice.
| Where | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Seafront: Avenida do Mar (and the Pontinha harbour wall, if it is open to the public that night) | Close to the 25 harbour stations [1]; suggested by a commercial guide [15] | Very busy; no parking on Avenida do Mar from 14:00 in 2025 [10]; arrive early |
| Parque de Santa Catarina | Raised park above the harbour; in 2025 the council ran a free concert there, a band from 20:00 and a DJ until the fireworks [16] | Concert line-up and times for 2026 not yet announced |
| High viewpoints: Pico dos Barcelos, Miradouro das Neves, Fortaleza do Pico | The whole bay at once (commercial blog suggestions) [15] | Further out, roads busy; hills can be in cloud in December |
| A bay-view hotel room or restaurant | No crowd, easier with children | We have no prices; see the questions to ask below |
| From the sea | Looking back at the lit city | See below |
Getting to the fireworks and back: 31 December and 1 January
The road and bus details below are from New Year 2025/26 (31 December 2025 and 1 January 2026), because the 2026 notices weren’t out when we checked; the ferry time is from the December 2026 timetable. The council published its 2025 traffic notice on 30 December and SIGA its holiday timetables on 19 December [9][11].
- Roads: Funchal council’s 2025 notice closed Avenida do Mar and the streets south of Avenida Arriaga to traffic from 20:00 to 02:00, and parts of Avenida Arriaga and Avenida Zarco from 21:00 to 05:00; parking on Avenida do Mar was banned from 14:00 on 31 December; several hillside roads became one-way, all under PSP police control [9][10]. Look for the 2026 notice on the council’s InfoMobilidade site (infomobilidade.funchal.pt) [9].
- Buses on 31 December 2025: Horários do Funchal ran its Saturday service; Rodoeste (west) and CAM (east) ran their weekday non-school timetables [11]. From 20:00 to 02:00 Funchal buses ended their routes at points outside the closed area, such as Avenida do Infante and Rua 31 de Janeiro [10].
- Buses on 1 January 2026: Sunday/holiday timetables on all three operators [11]. A daytime timetable doesn’t guarantee a bus after midnight; check SIGA for the 2026 timetables and route changes [18].
- Tickets: in 2025 the Horários do Funchal ticket offices closed early or stayed shut on 31 December (Anadia closed; Pinga and Marina 8:30–16:30) and all were closed on 1 January [11]. Buy or top up your bus card before the 31st.
- On foot: if you’re staying in central Funchal, the Lido hotel zone or the old town, walking is the reliable option; allow for crowds after midnight.
- Taxis: in 2025 the ranks on Avenida do Mar and Largo dos Varadouros closed from 20:00 to 02:00, with temporary ranks nearby, including south of the Marina Shopping [10].
- Car: we’d park it for the night. A hire car also carries the regional fee of €2 per full day (€1 for zero-emission cars), for at most 10 days, on contracts since 1 June 2026 [19]. Bus and car options in general: Madeira without a car.
- Porto Santo: the island gets its own two launch stations [1]. On 31 December the Lobo Marinho’s regular return from Porto Santo leaves early, at 11:30, on the December 2026 timetable [14].
From the sea: cruise ships and boats
Cruise ships. In 2025 the port authority APRAM counted 11 cruise ships and one large sailing ship, bringing more than 30,000 people, about 22,000 of them passengers [8]. During the day three ships were berthed inside the harbour (one moving out to anchor at 17:30) and the rest were at anchor in the bay; passengers from anchored ships came ashore by tender while the weather allowed [8]. The year before, 2024, also had 11 ships and a sailing ship with about 27,000 people [8]. The 2026 list wasn’t published when we checked. If you’re arriving on a cruise, expect the old town and the seafront to be busy from the afternoon.
The Lobo Marinho party. Porto Santo Line sells a New Year’s Eve 2026-2027 party on its ferry in the bay: fireworks and party €195 for an adult and €105 for a child, or “party only” €110; open bar and supper, live music, dinner jacket or dark suit required [13]. Tickets are non-refundable under any circumstance [13], so think about the weather risk before you buy. Sales in Funchal at Avenida do Mar 20, Estrada Monumental 175 and the harbour kiosk, or +351 291 210 300 [13].
Smaller boats. Funchal boat operators advertise New Year’s Eve trips on catamarans and yachts (one example: [23]). We haven’t compared them and have no reliable prices, so book directly and ask what happens if the sea is too rough to sail.
Where to stay and when to book
- How early: the hotel association surveyed 261 hotels across Portugal between 24 November and 12 December 2025; Madeira reported a 79% booking rate for the New Year period and 71% for Christmas, the highest of any region [12]. That is a booking rate, not a count of free bay-view rooms, but it tells you not to leave it late.
- Questions to ask before you pay: is the fireworks view from the room itself or from a shared terrace; is a gala dinner included or compulsory; is there a minimum stay over 31 December; what is the total price with taxes; and what are the cancellation terms.
- Where: a hotel in Funchal within walking distance of the seafront saves you the traffic closures (Lido and the hotel zone, the centre, the old town), and puts you close to the Christmas market and Market Night too. Staying outside Funchal (Caniço, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol) means getting in before the roads close and back after midnight: before booking, confirm a return transfer, where it can pick you up outside the closed streets, and how far you’d walk. Neighbourhoods compared: where to stay in Madeira.
- Tourist tax: Funchal charges €2 per person per night, for at most 7 nights; children 12 and under are exempt [17]. Other councils: tourist tax in Portugal.
- Dates in 2026: 23 December is a Wednesday, 25 December a Friday and 31 December a Thursday.
With kids
- Daytime activities for children: the Christmas Village on the municipal square, the lights and the market [4][6][24].
- Market Night and midnight are late and loud. With small children, go to Market Night early in the evening, and for the fireworks a hotel balcony or a spot away from the 25 harbour stations [1] is likely to be calmer than the seafront. Agree on a meeting point in case you get separated.
- Healthcare over the holidays: Madeira’s health line is SRS24, 800 24 24 20 [20]; the paediatric emergency is at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça in Funchal [21]. More in Madeira with kids and healthcare in Portugal for travellers.
If the weather changes the plan
December weather in numbers: Madeira weather by month. In 2025 a storm (depression Francis) brought an IPMA orange warning for New Year’s night. The regional government considered moving the fireworks to 20:00 but kept midnight; the council started its free concert at 20:00 instead, and one cruise ship cancelled its call [7][8][16].
Bad weather also closes the mountains. When IPMA issues a weather warning, the forestry institute IFCN can close every classified walking route on the island: closures were reported on 9 December 2025 and again on 1 January 2026, both times with the Eira do Serrado–Pico do Areeiro forest road [32][33]. If a New Year’s Day levada walk is part of the plan, keep a lowland alternative; how the trails, fees and bookings work: Madeira levada walks.
Madeira’s airport is also known for wind closures [22], so fly in a day or two before 31 December rather than on the day, and pack a rain jacket. Routes and the wind: flights to Madeira.

Quick answers
Is Madeira worth visiting at Christmas and in December?
Yes, if you want mild weather and a festive city rather than a beach holiday. Funchal averages a high of 21.0 °C and a low of 15.5 °C in December, with about 9 rainy days (IPMA 1991–2020) and a sea averaging 19.9 °C offshore (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). The festive season runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027 on the regional calendar, with lights, a Christmas market, Market Night on 23 December and the New Year's Eve fireworks.
When are the Christmas lights on in Madeira?
Visit Madeira says Funchal switches its lights on at nightfall on 1 December, and the regional calendar runs the festive season from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. The exact switch-on time for 2026 was not yet announced as of 11 October 2026; the events listing still showed the 2024 edition, 1 December at 18:00.
What are the Missas do Parto in Madeira?
Nine early-morning masses before Christmas, one for each month of Mary's pregnancy. The 2026 listing runs from 15 to 23 December, starting around 6:00, in Funchal Cathedral and parishes across the island; some parishes start earlier. After mass people stay outside the church with music, pork-in-wine-and-garlic sandwiches and homemade liqueurs.
What is Market Night (Noite do Mercado) in Funchal?
The night of 23 December, when the streets around the Mercado dos Lavradores close to traffic and fill with stalls, music and thousands of people doing their last Christmas shopping. In 2024 the street music ran from 19:00 to 04:00 and the carols at the Praça do Peixe started at 23:00. The 2026 programme was not yet announced as of 11 October 2026.
What time are the Madeira New Year's Eve fireworks?
At midnight on 31 December. The official events site lists the 2026 show from 23:59 on 31 December to 00:15 on 1 January 2027, and the display itself lasts about eight minutes. Check the programme in late December: in 2025 the regional government briefly considered moving it to 20:00 because of a storm warning, then kept midnight.
Where is the best place to watch the fireworks in Funchal?
Any public spot with a clear view of the bay, because the launch stations ring the city. The current listing has 26 on the hillsides, 25 along the harbour at Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis, 5 at sea and 2 on Porto Santo. The seafront (Avenida do Mar) is closest and very busy; Parque de Santa Catarina had a free concert in 2025; higher viewpoints such as Pico dos Barcelos show the whole bay but can be lost in cloud.
Do buses run on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in Madeira?
For New Year 2025/26 they did, on reduced timetables: Horários do Funchal ran its Saturday service on 31 December 2025 and its Sunday/holiday service on 1 January 2026, and Rodoeste and CAM ran holiday timetables on 1 January 2026. From 20:00 to 02:00 on New Year's Eve, Funchal buses ended their routes outside the closed seafront. A daytime timetable doesn't guarantee a bus after midnight; check SIGA for 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027.
How early should I book a hotel for New Year's Eve in Madeira?
As early as you can. In the hotel association's survey of late November to mid-December 2025, Madeira reported a 79% booking rate for the New Year period, the highest in Portugal. Before paying, check whether the view is from your room, whether a gala dinner is compulsory, the minimum stay and the cancellation terms.
