Ponta do Sol, Madeira

Small town on Madeira's sunny south-west coast where the Digital Nomad Village began in 2021 and, by the project's own account, is still active in 2026: a free workspace, weekly meet-ups, a pebble beach and a car-friendly rather than bus-friendly location. Research draft.

In detail

The notes behind this page

Ponta do Sol is a small town on the south-west coast (the whole municipality had 8,360 people in 2021), half an hour’s drive from Funchal. It became known in February 2021 as the first Digital Nomad Village, and the project says the village and its free workspace are still running in 2026. Come for the community and the quiet; if you plan to rely on buses, check the journeys you will need before choosing accommodation.

The nomad village (research)

  • Started 1 February 2021; the project’s page, modified 19 August 2026, says it “is still active”. [digitalnomads.startupmadeira.eu, 9 Oct 2026]
  • Free workspace at the John dos Passos cultural centre: internet, desks, a local host, 09:00–18:00 (days not stated; a June 2026 blog says weekdays only). [digitalnomads.startupmadeira.eu; picoandponcha.com]
  • Community lunch on Wednesdays and “Purple Friday” drinks at the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, as the organisers describe it. Free online registration unlocks Slack and WhatsApp. [digitalnomads.startupmadeira.eu, 9 Oct 2026]

Living here (research)

  • Bus: check the current fare and both directions in SIGA. The Rodoeste locality PDF was created in February 2023 and mixes direct services with transfers in Ribeira Brava, sometimes sharing the same onward bus. We have not verified a current total or guaranteed connections [7]. One direct example in SIGA’s line 80 PDF is Funchal 10:00 → Ponta do Sol about 11:05. In reverse, it shows Ponta do Sol 18:30 → Funchal 19:40 Monday–Friday excluding public holidays, or 17:45 → 18:40 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. These are selected services, not the whole timetable. No service on 25 December; the 2023 locality PDF also excludes line 80 on 26 December and 1 January, unlike the SIGA line PDF, so confirm those dates with SIGA [7][20]. Checked 12 October 2026.
  • Health centre in town on weekdays (08:00–18:00), no urgent service listed; Calheta’s health centre and the Funchal hospital have 24-hour urgent care. Health line SRS24 Madeira: 800 24 24 20. More in healthcare in Portugal for travellers. [sesaram.pt, 9 Oct 2026; GOV.UK]
  • Beach: a small pebble cove, lifeguarded 10 June–14 September 2026; not on the 2026 Blue Flag list. [visitmadeira.com; JORAM Portaria 206/2026; ABAE 2026] The sand at Calheta and the other beaches: best beaches in Madeira.
  • Nearby places: Madalena do Mar beach with a small playground (not designated a lifeguarded beach on the 2026 regional list), the Paul da Serra plateau above town, and the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, where the community meets on Fridays.
  • Groceries: a coliving site says the nearest supermarket is a 10-minute walk, with a Pingo Doce in Ribeira Brava. Commercial source, unverified. [casabasilico.com, Jun 2026]

Ponta do Sol: quick answers

Is the Ponta do Sol digital nomad village still active?

The organisers say so: the Digital Nomads Madeira Islands page for Ponta do Sol, modified on 19 August 2026, says the village 'is still active, with a free working space, events, access to the community'. The free workspace is in the John dos Passos cultural centre, 09:00–18:00; one June 2026 blog says weekdays only.

How do I get from Funchal to Ponta do Sol without a car?

Check SIGA for your date, stop and return journey, and check the current fare. Rodoeste's 2023 locality PDF mixes direct journeys with transfers in Ribeira Brava; it does not establish today's frequency or guaranteed connections. One direct example in the line 80 PDF checked on 12 October 2026 is Funchal 10:00 to Ponta do Sol about 11:05, except 25 December. For 26 December and 1 January, confirm with SIGA because the old locality PDF excludes this bus on those dates. By car it is 24 km, about 27 minutes on the routing model.

Is Ponta do Sol a good base with kids?

It's quiet and sunny with a small pebble beach, but services are thin: the health centre lists no urgent service, the nearest sandy beach is in Calheta and most activities need a car. Families who want buses and pools at the door usually do better in Funchal.
