OK with kids

Documented only: restaurants, WC, beach support and lifeguards in the bathing season, which Visit Olhão lists for Praia do Farol only, not Hangares; lifeguard season 1 Jun–30 Sep 2026 (ABAE). Child ferry fares from Olhão (4–10) and Faro (4–11). Research — not first-hand.

The notes

Praia do Farol is the sea beach at the lighthouse end of Culatra island, facing the Barra Nova inlet. Boats come from both Olhão (all year) and Faro (until 31 October in 2026). That makes it the one island beach a Faro-based visitor and an Olhão-based visitor can both reach without a car. Services and lifeguards are listed for Farol but not for Hangares, 1.5 km east. Check before you go: outside summer the last useful boats back leave in the late afternoon.

What we found (research)

  • At the island’s west end, named after the lighthouse by Barra Nova near Cabo de Santa Maria. Restaurants, WC, beach support and lifeguards in the bathing season apply to Praia do Farol only, not Hangares. [Visit Olhão — Praias, 4 Oct 2026]
  • Ilha do Farol-Mar: bathing season 1 Jun–30 Sep 2026, Blue Flag period 19 Jun–30 Sep 2026. [ABAE, 4 Oct 2026]
  • From Olhão: the Olhão → Culatra → Farol ferry. Winter (21 Sep–31 May) departures from Farol are 07:30, 12:45, 16:00 and 19:15. Adult €5.00 return, child (4–10) €2.50; cash at the Olhão pier. [amoteolhao.com, updated 23 Sep 2026; olhaocubista.pt]
  • From Faro (Portas do Mar), 2026: [CM Faro, 4 Oct 2026]
    • 1 Jun–15 Sep: from Faro 08:30, 10:35, 12:25, 14:45, 16:45 and 18:45 (18:45 only until 31 Aug); from Farol 09:20, 11:20, 13:10, 16:05, 18:00 and 19:30 (19:30 only until 31 Aug).
    • 1–31 October (timetable image on CM Faro, checked 11 Oct 2026): from Faro 08:30, 10:35, 14:45, 16:45; from Farol 09:20, 11:20, 16:05 and 17:30, so the last boat back leaves at 17:30, not later.
    • About 40 minutes. Adult €6.15 return / €3.60 single; child (4–11) €3.00 / €2.00. The operator’s contact on the poster is [email protected].
  • Animaris also runs a “shuttle” boat to Deserta, Farol and Culatra from Faro: 15 minutes, €10 one way. Departures 10:30–16:30 and returns 11:30–18:30, on the timetable updated 22 Sep 2026. [Animaris poster on CM Faro, 4 Oct 2026]

Good to know / Check before you go

  • Timetables change by season — check the operator’s current timetable before you go.
  • After 31 October no Faro–Farol timetable was published at the time of writing. From November, plan on the Olhão boat.
  • The Animaris times are a combined list for Deserta, Farol and Culatra. Check which stops each departure makes when you book.
  • Pin: the ABAE Farol-Mar point. The Farol ferry landing (OSM) is about 500 m north-west of it, on the lagoon side.
Where the places are

From Praia do Farol (Ilha do Farol): Ilha da Armona (8 km), Praia da Fuseta (Fuseta-Ria and Ilha da Fuseta) (14 km). Straight-line distances from the centre point, not driving times.
