Ilha da Culatra

Culatra is the barrier island directly south of Olhão, with no cars and three settlements: the fishing village of Culatra at the east end, Hangares in the middle and Farol, with its lighthouse, at the west end. A public ferry from Olhão runs all year, so it works as a day trip for a remote worker on a free afternoon or for a family beach day. What to watch: the winter timetable has only four departures a day, and you pay cash at the pier.

What we found (research)

• Culatra and Farol lie south of Olhão but belong administratively to the municipality of Faro. [Visit Olhão — Transportes Fluviais, 4 Oct 2026]
• Praia da Culatra is at the island’s east end, by a former fishing settlement that until a few decades ago was built of wooden houses. Restaurants near the beach, WC, beach support and lifeguards in the bathing season; the Barra do Lavajo has no lifeguards. [Visit Olhão — Praias, 4 Oct 2026]
• Hangares beach is about 1.5 km east of Farol, reachable by boat or on foot from Farol; an old bunker and barbed wire remain from when navy seaplanes were based there. [Visit Olhão — Praias]

• From Faro (Portas do Mar), a boat to Culatra runs in summer and, on the timetable CM Faro shows for 1–31 October 2026, still twice a day: departures 08:30 and 14:45, which run only if there are passengers, back from Culatra 09:35 and 15:35, about 50 minutes. We found no Faro timetable for November onwards, so from then on plan on the Olhão ferry; adult €7.15 return / €4.10 single, child (4–11) €3.50 / €2.50. • Hangares is not a stop on the scheduled Olhão ferry (amoteolhao.com lists it only for water taxis). A seasonal boat, Passeios Ria Formosa’s “Summer Route”, runs Olhão–Hangares from June to September at €5.50 adult / €3.50 child (5–11) return, and on October weekends from 1 to 22 October with advance booking. • The ferry calls at Culatra and Farol in a loop, so the departure times at the islands are not in Olhão order (for example, Farol 07:30 and then Culatra 07:45). Read the column for the pier you are leaving from.
• Visit Olhão links to official timetable PDFs for both Olhão lines, but on 4 Oct 2026 those links returned “page not found”, so the times above come from two secondary sites that agree with each other.
