Ria Formosa islandswhich island, which ferry, and what it costs (2026)
The Ria Formosa's barrier islands from west to east — Ilha de Faro, Deserta, Culatra and the Farol, Armona, Fuseta, Ilha de Tavira, Cabanas and Barril — with the ferry for each, 2026 fares, winter timetables and which island suits families, a quiet day or a car-free stay.

Short answer: the Ria Formosa is a chain of sandbar islands along about 60 km of the eastern Algarve, from Faro to Manta Rota [17]. Each town has its own boat. For a first island day we would pick Ilha de Tavira from Tavira (adult return from €2.00) [10] or Armona from Olhão (€4.40, all year) [3]; for a car-free village, Culatra; for an empty beach, Ilha Deserta from Faro (€5 one way) [1]; with a pushchair, Praia do Barril, which has a footbridge and an adapted beach train instead of a boat [11]. We have not taken these ferries ourselves; everything below is from operators and the municipalities, with dates.
Timetables change by season — check the operator’s current timetable before you go. Fares below are as published on or before 4 October 2026.
Which island for what
| Island / beach | From | Crossing | Adult return | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Praia de Faro | Faro (also by road bridge) | boat or bus 16 | €4.10 boat [1] | No-boat option, all year |
| Ilha Deserta | Faro | 45 min | €5 one way [1][2] | Quiet, boardwalk, one restaurant |
| Farol | Olhão / Faro | ~45 min / ~40 min | €5.00 / €6.15 [3][1] | Lighthouse village, sea beach |
| Culatra | Olhão (Faro in summer) | ~30 min | €4.40 [3] | Car-free village |
| Armona | Olhão | 15–20 min | €4.40 [3] | Lagoon beach at the pier; all year |
| Fuseta | Fuseta | ~10 min | €2.30 [7] | Families: calm lagoon beach in the village too |
| Ilha de Tavira | Tavira / Quatro Águas | short | €2.70 / €2.00 [10] | Cheapest crossing; 11 km of beach |
| Terra Estreita | Santa Luzia | short | not confirmed for 2026 | Quieter end of Ilha de Tavira |
| Praia do Barril | Pedras d’El-Rei | footbridge + beach train | — | Pushchairs, accessible beach [11] |
| Praia de Cabanas | Cabanas | ~5 min | ~€1.50 (2025 blog) [13] | Short hop from the village |
From Faro
All boats leave from the Portas do Mar quay by the old town [1].
- Praia de Faro — Jump4Nature. Adult return €4.10, child (5–11) €2.30. From 2 November to 31 December 2026: from Faro 10:00, 11:10, 12:20, 14:20, 15:30 [1]. Praia de Faro is also reachable all year on bus 16 over the road bridge.
- Ilha Deserta — Animaris. Ferry 45 minutes, €5 one way: from Faro 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 15:15, 16:45 (poster updated 22 September 2026; no end date given, weather permitting). A hop-on, hop-off shuttle links Deserta, the Farol and Culatra at €10 one way. Tickets online [1][2].
- Farol and Culatra. The poster for 1–31 October 2026 gives the Farol line from Faro at 08:30, 10:35, 14:45 and 16:45, back from the Farol at 09:20, 11:20, 16:05 and 17:30 (adult return €6.15, child €3.00), about 40 minutes; the same poster still lists Culatra at 08:30 and 14:45, back 09:35 and 15:35, running only if there are passengers (adult return €7.15), about 50 minutes [1]. The operator is identified only by an e-mail address on the municipal page. From November, use the Olhão boats.
From Olhão: Armona, Culatra, the Farol
Olhão’s boats run all year from the pier on Avenida 5 de Outubro; tickets are cash only at the pier office [3]. The Olhão–Armona line is a public-service route under the regional transport authority [6]; we could not confirm the operator’s name, and the official timetable files linked from Visit Olhão were offline when we checked [5]. Times and fares here come from two independent local sites that agree, one updated on 23 September 2026 [3][4].
| Olhão → | Winter timetable (departures from Olhão) | Adult return | Child 4–10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armona | 1 Oct–31 Mar: 08:30, 12:00, 15:00*, 17:00 | €4.40 | €2.10 |
| Culatra → Farol (loop) | 21 Sep–31 May: 07:00, 11:00, 15:00, 18:30 | Culatra €4.40 · Farol €5.00 | €2.10 · €2.50 |
* algarvebus.info, a third independent site, says the 15:00 to Armona runs only in October, from 15 December to 5 January and at weekends and holidays in the rest of the winter; the two sites above list it without restriction. Ask at the pier.
In July and August the Armona boat runs roughly hourly, and the Culatra loop about seven times a day [3]. Hangares, the third settlement on Culatra, is not a stop on the scheduled ferry; it is about 1.5 km on foot from the Farol [16], or on a seasonal boat from Olhão [8].
From Fuseta
Passeios Ria Formosa runs the short crossing to Ilha da Fuseta, the eastern end of Armona: adult €2.30 return, child (5–11) €1.75. In May and October, boats leave about every half hour from 09:10 to 17:30, with a break from 12:30 to 14:00; in July and August, every few minutes [7]. The timetable image is labelled 2026 by the operator but the year is not printed on it. The village beach, Fuseta-Ria, is on the lagoon and described by the municipality as calm and popular with children [16].
From Tavira, Santa Luzia, Barril and Cabanas
- Ilha de Tavira — Silnido. Town pier: adult return €2.70, child 4–11 €1.15, hourly 09:30–18:30 (timetable from 7 September 2026). Quatro Águas: adult return €2.00, child €1.10, roughly every 30 minutes with a break from 13:45 to 15:00 (timetable from 1 October 2026). Under-fours free; tickets on site [10].
- Terra Estreita — from Santa Luzia. Passeios Ria Formosa runs this crossing [9]. Its 2026 timetable runs from 23 May to 30 September only, about every 20 minutes in July and August and 12 departures a day in late September; nothing scheduled is published for October to mid-May [21]. Check before you go.
- Praia do Barril — no boat. A footbridge from Pedras d’El-Rei and a beach train, with places for pushchairs and wheelchairs [11]. Check the beach train’s operating hours with Pedras d’El Rei for your date [22].
- Praia de Cabanas. Small boats from the Cabanas waterfront [12]. Confirm the current fare, operating dates and last return at the waterfront; see Cabanas beach.
Water taxis run on demand: in Tavira, for example, Quatro Águas to Ilha de Tavira €10 per trip, with a €5 surcharge between 20:00 and 08:00 [14]; in Olhão and Fuseta, 24 hours with booking [5].
Which island with kids
- Pushchair, no boat: Praia do Barril — footbridge and an adapted beach train, ramps, adapted toilets [11].
- Shortest boat ride and calm water by the pier: Armona’s lagoon beach is next to the landing; the ocean beach is a walk across the island [3][16].
- A beach in the village itself: Fuseta-Ria [16].
- Lifeguards: on the main island beaches from 1 June to 30 September 2026 [15]. Outside that, no lifeguards.
What no source told us: shade, and how far the walk from each landing to the sea side is with small children. Plan for no shade.
Before you go
- Cash for Olhão’s boats [3]; card or online for Animaris [2].
- Last boat back — winter timetables end early (Olhão–Armona’s last return is at 17:30 [3]).
- Naturism: parts of Ilha de Tavira [18] and Ilha Deserta have naturist stretches.
- Protected area: the islands are in the Ria Formosa Natural Park [17] — stay on boardwalks in the dunes.

Quick answers
Which Ria Formosa island is best?
It depends on the day. For the shortest, cheapest crossing from a town with a station: Ilha de Tavira (from €2.00 return) or Armona from Olhão (€4.40). For a village with no cars: Culatra. For a near-empty beach with a boardwalk: Ilha Deserta from Faro. With a pushchair: Praia do Barril, which has a footbridge and an adapted beach train instead of a boat. This is our research, not a visit.
How do I get to Ilha de Tavira?
By Silnido ferry from Tavira's town pier (adult return €2.70, child 4–11 €1.15, timetable from 7 September 2026 hourly 09:30–18:30) or from Quatro Águas (adult return €2.00, timetable from 1 October 2026 with a midday break). Tickets are sold on site; under-fours travel free.
Do the Ria Formosa ferries run in winter?
Some do. The Olhão lines to Armona and to Culatra and the Farol run all year, with four departures a day in winter on both, per two local sites in September 2026. Tavira's Silnido ferries publish autumn timetables. From Faro, the boat to Praia de Faro runs to 31 December with a reduced timetable, the Farol line runs until 31 October (last boat back from the Farol at 17:30 in October), and the Culatra boat runs in summer and, in October 2026, twice a day only if there are passengers.
Can you visit several islands in one day?
From Faro, yes: Animaris sells a hop-on, hop-off shuttle between Ilha Deserta, the Farol and Culatra at €10 one way (poster updated 22 September 2026). From Olhão, the scheduled ferry calls at Culatra and the Farol on the same loop.
