The Douro valley from Portoday trip by train, boat or a night on a quinta

Three ways to see the Douro from Porto: the CP train along the river to Régua and Pinhão (about 2 h 20, €12.45 one way), a tour, or a night or a week on a wine estate. From 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section is closed and CP runs replacement buses.

Short answer: the cheapest and most scenic way is the CP train from Porto to Pinhão (about 2 h 20, €12.45 one way), with a boat trip from the Pinhão quay before the train back (check that the boat time fits the trains). From 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section is closed and CP replaces it with buses, so add a bus leg and more time. A tour saves planning and adds quintas and viewpoints you can’t reach by rail. If you can, stay a night on a quinta: trains are hours apart and the valley is best in the evening.

By train: times and fares (2026)

The line closes between Marco de Canaveses and Régua from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027. CP has suspended trains on that section for modernisation work by Infraestruturas de Portugal and will run replacement buses instead: a direct Caíde–Régua bus, plus buses calling at every station between Marco de Canaveses and Régua. Bicycles, scooters and wheelchairs cannot be carried, pets only in a carrier, and group tickets are not accepted. In CP’s timetable data the Douro departures from Porto terminate at Caíde or Marco de Canaveses from 3 November, so the times below apply only until 2 November 2026. [cp.pt notice, read 26 Oct 2026; CP timetable data, 26 Oct 2026]

From → to Example, valid only to 2 Nov 2026 Full one-way InterRegional fare, CP 2026
Porto Campanhã → Régua 07:30 → 09:25, direct €10.90 (€11.10 from São Bento)
Porto Campanhã → Pinhão 07:30 → 09:51, direct €12.35
Porto São Bento → Pinhão 15:20 → 17:37, with a change at Régua (arrives 17:11, two minutes to connect) €12.45
Porto Campanhã → Pocinho 07:30 → 10:50, direct €14.95 (€15.10 from São Bento)
Pinhão → Porto Campanhã 18:11 → 20:30, direct; this train ends at Campanhã, not São Bento €12.45

Times counted from CP’s own timetable data per service day and direction; fares from CP’s 2026 price table, which also lists 50% fares — check who qualifies. CP’s data has no through train from São Bento to Pinhão at all: São Bento departures either start at Campanhã or need a change at Régua. [CP timetable data, 26 Oct 2026]

  • The best views start after Régua, where the line runs along the river. CP’s MiraDouro service uses restored coaches with windows that open. [cp.pt]
  • The Marco de Canaveses–Régua section reopened in March 2026 after earlier works and closes again from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027, as above. [cp.pt, 26 Oct 2026]

On the river: boats from Pinhão

Magnífico Douro runs a 1 h 20 rabelo trip from the Pinhão quay past the quintas of Bomfim, Carvalhas, Roeda and Ventozelo: €30 from age 12, €15 for 6–11, free under 6; 10:00 departure from 29 March to 24 October 2026. [magnificodouro.pt] That early trip does not fit the 07:30 train from Campanhã (Pinhão 09:51): nine minutes is not enough. Ask the operator for later departures or a private boat, or stay the night. Other operators run similar trips; we have not compared them.

The historic train (summer only)

The Comboio Histórico do Douro runs between Régua and Tua on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays from 6 June to 18 October 2026: welcome at Régua station from 15:00, departure at 15:32, back in Régua at 18:22. €60 adults, €32 children 4–12. In 2026 it is hauled by a historic diesel, not steam. [cp.pt]

Staying on a quinta

  • Quinta de la Rosa, about a kilometre from Pinhão: rooms and apartments that take up to two extra beds; free Wi-Fi; lots of steps. [quintadelarosa.com]
  • Quinta de Ventozelo: Casa do Rio, two bedrooms and a private pool, 2 km from reception; cots free for 0–2, extra beds €40 a night for 3–17. [quintadeventozelo.pt]
  • Working from a quinta: neither publishes an internet speed. Ask for a speed test before you book a work week.

By car or tour

  • A car opens up viewpoints such as São Leonardo de Galafura, 640 m above the river near Régua, and quintas away from the stations. [roteirododouro.com]
  • Tours from Porto usually combine a quinta visit, lunch and a boat; compare what is included.
  • Driving yourself: electronic tolls, alcohol limits and child seats are in driving in Portugal.

With children and in summer

  • Plan around the train ride and a boat, not tastings.
  • Inland heat: Vila Real, above the valley, averages a 29.0 °C maximum in August; the valley floor is likely hotter. Go early, carry water, and keep the middle of the day for shade. [IPMA]

Quick answers

Can you do the Douro valley as a day trip from Porto by train?

Until 2 November 2026, yes: an early train leaves Campanhã at 07:30 and reaches Pinhão at 09:51, and trains back towards Porto leave Pinhão at 08:08, 12:18, 14:07, 16:41 and 18:11, about 2 h 20 each way. From 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section is closed for works: trains from Porto end at Caíde or Marco de Canaveses and CP runs replacement buses on to Régua, so a day trip means a train plus a bus plus another train. Check CP before you go.

How much is the train from Porto to Pinhão?

A full one-way InterRegional ticket from Porto São Bento costs €12.45 to Pinhão and €11.10 to Régua; the same table lists 50% fares for eligible passengers (CP prices valid from 1 January 2026; check who qualifies).

Is the Douro valley worth it with kids?

It can be, if you plan around trains and boats rather than wine tastings: the riverside train ride itself, a 1 h 20 rabelo boat trip from Pinhão (free under 6), and in summer the historic train (child 4–12 €32). Avoid the hottest hours in July and August.

Should I stay overnight in the Douro?

If you can. Trains are hours apart and the quintas are spread over steep hillsides, so one night turns a rushed day into an evening on the river. Some estates take families: Quinta de la Rosa has apartments for extra beds, Quinta de Ventozelo a two-bedroom house with a pool.
