Short answer: June to September, with May as the shoulder month. That is when Porto is warm (highs of 23–25 °C) and dry (3–6 rain days a month); September also has the warmest sea, about 18 °C. October to April is mild but wet, with 10–13 rain days a month. For the Douro valley, aim for May–June or September–October: inland July and August are hot.

Season by season

Season Best for Trade-off
Spring (Mar–May) Sightseeing, a work month from May Showery: plan indoor options
Summer (Jun–Aug) Beach days with children, the lifeguarded season Busiest; the sea stays cool
Autumn (Sep–Oct) September beach days, the Douro harvest Rain returns in October
Winter (Nov–Feb) A quiet work month, Christmas lights Wet: two or three rain days a week

The temperatures, rain and sea for every month are in Porto weather by month, including what Porto is like in winter. For September to November, with the Douro harvest, events, holidays and what closes, see Porto in autumn.

By trip type

  • Families with small children: mid-June to mid-September. The official bathing season at Porto and Matosinhos beaches in 2026 was 13 June–13 September [Portaria 204-A/2026], and Siza’s Piscina das Marés opens only in the summer season [Matosinhos Sport]. Even then the Atlantic is cool, about 17–18 °C. Which beach: Porto’s best beaches.
  • Remote work, a month or more: May–June or September. Winter is workable and quieter, but plan for rain on two or three days a week.
  • Douro valley: late spring and the harvest. The vindima usually runs from mid-September into early October, depending on the year [Into the Vineyard]. The historic train is scheduled from 6 June to 18 October in 2026 [CP]. More in Porto in autumn.
  • Events: São João peaks on the night of 23 to 24 June; in 2025 the city festival ran from 6 June to 6 July and the fireworks lit the river between the Luís I and Arrábida bridges [Ágora Porto]. Expect full hotels that night (our assumption). The 2025/26 Christmas lights ran from 29 November 2025 to 6 January 2026 [Ágora Porto]; Christmas, New Year’s Eve and what closes: Porto in December.
  • City sightseeing: any season; Porto rarely gets hot (13 days a year at 30 °C or more), but the steep streets are slippery in the rain.

Porto compared with Lisbon, briefly

Porto is cooler and wetter: its normal has 1,146.9 mm of rain over 105.4 days a year against 793.5 mm over 75.5 days in Lisbon, and its August maximum is 24.8 °C against 28.8 °C [IPMA]. For the coast near Lisbon, see best time to visit Lisbon.
