Monchique day tripFóia, the Caldas hot springs and walks in the hills
Monchique is the Algarve's mountain escape, about 30 minutes inland from Portimão. Drive up to Fóia (902 m, the region's highest point), stop at the Caldas de Monchique springs, and pick a walk from the town's waymarked routes. By car, or by the route 94 bus without Fóia.

Short answer: go by car if you can. From Portimão it is about 22 minutes to the Caldas de Monchique springs, 28 minutes to Monchique town and 40 minutes to the top of Fóia, at 902 m the highest point in the Algarve [1][9]. Without a car, the route 94 bus gets you to Caldas and the town, but not to Fóia [3].
A simple day plan
- Morning: Fóia. Drive up early, while the air is clearer, to the summit at 902 m [1]. It is about 8 km above Monchique town [3].
- Late morning: Monchique town. Walk the old centre and pick one of the short municipal routes (below).
- Lunch in town. Local products include medronho (a strawberry-tree spirit), chestnuts, black pork and honey [2].
- Afternoon: Caldas de Monchique on the way down — a hamlet built around thermal springs, 6 km below the town [2]. The spa resort there opens its heated indoor pool to visitors for a fee [6].
- With children: swap the spa for Parque da Mina on the same road (see below).
Getting there
By car. From central Portimão: Caldas 19.5 km / 22 min, Monchique 25.4 km / 28 min, Fóia 33.1 km / 40 min. From Carvoeiro to Fóia it is about 55 minutes (routing model, no traffic) [9]. The road climbs through the hills; leave time.
By bus. Vamus route 94 links Portimão (Avenida Guanaré, by the river) with Monchique via Caldas, in 45 to 55 minutes [3][4][10]. An unofficial timetable lists the times below, and the Vamus GTFS data (version of 25 September 2026, checked by day for October and November 2026) matches it, with the two differences marked [3][10]:
| Route | Daily (incl. Sundays and holidays) | Mon–Fri only, not on holidays |
|---|---|---|
| Portimão → Monchique | 09:00, 11:00, 14:15, 18:30 | 07:35, 17:30, 19:30 (school days only) |
| Monchique → Portimão | 07:50 (08:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays), 10:00, 12:30, 17:30 | 06:50, 14:30 |
The same source gives a fare of €5.80 each way, paid in cash on board [3]. School-day-only buses (such as a 07:15 from Monchique to a Portimão school) are left out of the table. The source notes that on school days some departures run about ten minutes later via a high school. The timetable is undated and unofficial — check the Vamus timetable before you rely on it. There is no bus to Fóia; take a taxi from Monchique [3].
Walks
The Monchique municipality lists waymarked routes with distances and difficulty [5]. A few that fit a day trip:
| Route | Length | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Percurso Pedestre Fóia | 6.6 km | Moderate |
| Árvores Monumentais – Vila (monumental trees, town) | 4.3 km | Easy |
| Percurso das Chaminés de Saia (chimneys) | 4.0 km | Easy |
| Rota dos Moinhos (mills) | 9.6 km | Moderate |
| Rota das Cascatas (waterfalls) | 20.8 km | Difficult |
Fóia is high and exposed; bring a layer even in summer. Monchique gets far more winter rain than the coast [2].
With children
Parque da Mina sits on the road between Portimão and Monchique, before Caldas. It is built around an 18th-century manor house and an old mine gallery, with farm animals (birds, ponies, dwarf goats), play areas, a mirror maze and a suspension bridge by a waterfall. It opens every day, 10:00–17:00 from October to March and 10:00–19:00 from April to September [7][8]. We did not find individual ticket prices on the pages we read — check before you go.
The short municipal routes in town (4 km, rated easy) are the realistic walks with younger children [5].
When to go
Monchique is a good escape on a hot coastal day and on a cloudy one, when the beach is not worth it. In winter expect rain and cooler air than on the coast [2].
