Mosteiros: black-sand beach and natural pools

Address
Rua da Beira Mar de Baixo, Mosteiros, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel

Hard with kids

The pools are supervised in the bathing season and have toilets and parking (tourism portal), but suitability for small children is unverified: calm sea only, follow the lifeguard. The beach faces the open Atlantic.

The notes

What the sources say (research)

  • Mosteiros sits on a lava delta at the west tip of São Miguel, with a black-sand beach and several natural pools at the rocky ends of the delta; the four sea stacks offshore are what is left of an old submarine volcano. [turismo.azores.gov.pt, 10 Oct 2026]
  • The natural pools are supervised in the bathing season and have parking and toilets; the tourism portal also calls them a popular sunset spot. [turismo.azores.gov.pt]
  • 2026 bathing season for both the beach and the south pools: 15 June to 13 September (Portaria 39/2026). Only the south pools (Poças Sul dos Mosteiros) have a 2026 Blue Flag. [Portaria 39/2026; ABAE 2026]
  • The map pin is the natural pools; the beach is a short walk along the delta. We haven’t checked the walk.

Bus 206: choose the stop and return day

The AzoresBus PDF valid from 2 October 2026 lists direct journeys from Ponta Delgada (Alfândega) to Mosteiros (Igreja) taking 60–63 minutes, or 65–68 minutes to Banda de Além. These are village stops, not a verified drop-off at the pools. Ramal Mosteiros (Merendário) is a separate stop; do not substitute its times for Igreja. [7]

For 12–18 October 2026, the published year-round columns give the following direct journeys. Counts include only columns with times at both named stops, not separate connecting services. [7]

Days Alfândega → Igreja: departures Igreja → Alfândega: departures Return journey time
Mon 12 to Fri 16 October, working-day columns 07:50, 10:40, 12:45, 15:00, 16:30, 17:30 06:20, 09:10, 12:10, 14:50, 17:40 58–60 min

The last listed direct return leaves Banda de Além at 17:35 on working days, 16:35 on Saturday and 18:25 on Sunday, then Igreja at 17:40, 16:40 and 18:27 respectively. Arrival at Alfândega is 18:40, 17:40 and 19:28. From Banda de Além, return journeys across these days take 63–69 minutes. [7]

The working-day 07:05 departure from Banda de Além (07:07 at Igreja) has no Ponta Delgada arrival in its column. A separate school-day service starts at Ginetes (Igreja); we have not confirmed its school calendar or a connection. The June–September services marked JS do not apply to this October week. We have not verified temporary changes: check the current AzoresBus line 206 PDF, your exact stop and the return before travelling. [7]
