In detail
Ribeira Grande is the main town on São Miguel’s north coast, about 31,000 people in the municipality and 18 minutes’ drive from Ponta Delgada. For a longer stay its pull is what’s nearby: the long sand beach at Santa Bárbara with a surf school, the warm pools of Caldeira Velha on the road up to Lagoa do Fogo, and a coworking centre in town. It is quieter than Ponta Delgada and easier with a car.
For surfers, hot-spring fans and drivers, it can be: Santa Bárbara beach and Caldeira Velha are both within about 5 km in a straight line, and Ponta Delgada is 18 minutes by car. Without a car it is harder; there are direct buses to Ponta Delgada every day on line 102 and night line N05 (line 103 reaches the Ribeira Grande terminal only a few times a week), but sights inland need wheels or a tour.
Azores Surf Center gives lessons on Santa Bárbara beach from June to September and 'condition dependent' from October to May. A 1½-hour group lesson costs €45 with board and wetsuit (operator, October 2026).
CEmpA, a business centre on Rua do Mourato, has a coworking plan at €100 a month + VAT (€116 with the Azores' 16% VAT) on an annual contract and a 'Nómada' plan shown at €30 + VAT, labelled both per day and per month on its site. Ask before you go.
