The Azores in winteris it worth it? Weather, prices and what's open, December to March
An honest look at São Miguel from November to March: highs of 17–18 °C, rain on 11–15 days a month and about 3 hours of sun a day, but hotel rates around a third of August's, hot springs open all year and whale boats still running. What closes, what changes in 2026/27 and who it suits.

The short answer: worth it for quiet, low prices, hot springs and mild air; not worth it for sun or beach time. From December to February Ponta Delgada averages highs of 17–18 °C, rain (1 mm or more) on 11–15 days a month [1] and about three hours of sunshine a day (older NOAA series) [21]. In return, in January 2026 the average hotel room cost about a third of August’s rate and there were far fewer visitors: 121,200 guest-nights against 695,300 in August [2][3][4].
Sea data, checked 11 October 2026: we calculated monthly averages from NOAA OISST v2.1 for 2001–2020 at 37.625° N, 25.625° W, offshore from Ponta Delgada [22]. We averaged each year’s daily values within each month, then averaged those 20 monthly means. The 0.25° grid combines satellite and in-water observations; it represents offshore surface water, not a reading at a beach or pool. These are historical averages, not a forecast. Dataset method: [5].
The winter numbers (Ponta Delgada)
| Month | High °C | Low °C | Rain mm | Rainy days | Sea °C |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 19.9 | 14.9 | 95.3 | 11.8 | 19.4 |
| December | 18.3 | 13.4 | 152.8 | 15.0 | 17.9 |
| January | 17.5 | 12.7 | 102.1 | 13.0 | 17.0 |
| February | 17.4 | 12.1 | 87.2 | 10.8 | 16.5 |
| March | 17.9 | 12.6 | 97.1 | 11.7 | 16.3 |
Temperatures and rain: IPMA 1991–2020 [1]. Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1, 2001–2020 [22]. No night below 0 °C at the station in that normal [1]. Higher ground is much wetter: rain rises by about 196 mm a year for every 100 m [6], so Sete Cidades and Furnas see more cloud than the coast. All months: Azores weather by month.

What’s still good in winter
- Hot springs: Terra Nostra opens daily 10:30–16:30 (closed 25 December) [8]; Poça da Dona Beija 08:30–23:00 [9]; Caldeira Velha all year, closing at 17:00 from November to March [7]. Warm water on a cool, wet day is the best case for winter here (hot springs guide).
- Whales: sperm whales are around all year; blue, fin and sei whales have been detected acoustically in autumn and winter, though they’re mainly a spring sight [16] (whale watching).
- Lagoa do Fogo by car: the road closure and shuttle apply only 1 August–30 September and at Easter [14].
- Work weeks: few visitors and lower hotel rates make a quiet month of work plausible (digital nomad guide).
What closes or changes
- Vila Franca islet: regular boats are scheduled to stop after 11 October 2026 [10]. Off-season visits are capped at 160 a day on a marked trail, max 1 h 30 [11].
- Piscinas de São Pedro in Ponta Delgada: June–September only [12].
- Surf lessons: from October to May the lesson spot is “condition dependent” rather than fixed at Santa Bárbara [13].
- Flights: Azores Airlines adds mainland flights for winter 2026/27 but suspends Paris, Barcelona and Frankfurt [17] (flights guide).
- Terceira: Algar do Carvão closes from late October or November 2026 until the end of the first quarter of 2027 [18] (Angra do Heroísmo).
Storms and flexible days
December has the most heavy-rain days of the year in Ponta Delgada (4.5 days with 10 mm or more) [1]. Check IPMA’s warnings for the Azores and the regional civil protection alerts before day trips and boat bookings [19][20], and keep a spare day or two at the end of your stay for anything weather-dependent.
Who it suits
- Yes: remote workers who want quiet and lower rates, hot-spring and walking people who don’t mind rain gear, families on a budget who’ll trade beach for pools of warm water.
- No: anyone after winter sun (about 3 hours a day [21], see best time to visit), beach holidays, or a short trip built around the crater-lake views.

Quick answers
Is it worth going to the Azores in winter?
Yes, if you want quiet, mild temperatures, hot springs and lower prices, and can live with rain (1 mm or more) on 11–15 days a month and short sunshine. No, if you want beach days or guaranteed crater views. In January 2026 the average hotel room sold for €64.64 against €183.35 in August, and the islands had about a sixth of August's guest-nights.
How cold are the Azores in winter?
Not cold, but damp. In Ponta Delgada, IPMA's 1991–2020 normals give average highs of 17.4–18.3 °C and lows of 12.1–13.4 °C from December to February, no frost on record in that period; relative humidity is around 83% in December (older NOAA series). The sea averages 17.9 °C in December, 17.0 °C in January and 16.5 °C in February (NOAA OISST v2.1, 2001–2020).
Does it rain a lot in the Azores in winter?
Yes. December is the wettest month in Ponta Delgada (152.8 mm on 15 rainy days), January has 13 rainy days and February 10.8. Much of it falls as showers between brighter spells. Higher ground, such as Sete Cidades and Furnas, gets more rain than the coast.
What is closed in the Azores in winter?
On São Miguel the Vila Franca islet boats (last scheduled 2026 trip 11 October) and the Piscinas de São Pedro (June–September); surf lessons move away from Santa Bárbara depending on conditions from October to May. Caldeira Velha stays open but closes at 17:00 from November to March. On Terceira, Algar do Carvão closes from late October or November 2026 until the first quarter of 2027 for building works.
Can you see whales in the Azores in winter?
Trips run, and sperm whales are present all year. The big baleen whales are mostly a spring event, though they have been detected acoustically in autumn and winter. At Terra Azul the October–March fare is €65 against €78 in summer.
