Lisbon or Madeiraweather, costs, work, kids and flights compared
Lisbon is a capital with museums, nightlife, beaches on a train line and far more flights. Funchal, on Madeira's south coast, is warmer and drier in winter, with a warmer sea, levada walks and lower asking rents. Same clock, 1 h 40 apart by air. IPMA data, costs and rules, with sources.

Checked on 10 October 2026. Air and rain figures are IPMA long-term averages (1991–2020); sea figures use NOAA OISST (2001–2020), recalculated on 11 October 2026. These are not forecasts. Prices, timetables and rules change: check before you go.
Short answer: pick Lisbon for a city: museums, food, nightlife, beaches on a train line and the most flights, which makes it the easy long weekend. Pick Madeira for nature and a mild winter: levada walks, a warmer sea and lower asking rents, and Funchal on the south coast has fewer rain days than Lisbon from October to May [1][2]. They keep the same clock, and about 93 flights a week leave Lisbon for Funchal, 1 h 40 [25], so the two are easy to combine.
Pick Lisbon if…
- You want a city break. A capital with its old town, food, museums and nightlife.
- You have a long weekend. From London about 150 non-stop flights a week to Lisbon against about 31 to Funchal, and the fastest flight is 2 h 40 against 3 h 50 [23][24]. The metro reaches the centre in about 20 minutes [15].
- You want summer heat and beaches. Lisbon’s August high averages 28.8 °C, Funchal’s 26.8 °C [1][2]; calm town beaches in Cascais are 33–40 minutes by train [35].
- You want the widest choice of coworking. See Lisbon for digital nomads.
Pick Madeira if…
- You travel in winter and stay on the south coast. In January Funchal averages a 20.0 °C high and 6.2 rain days; Lisbon 15.1 °C and 10.0 [1][2]. The sea off Funchal is 3.7 °C warmer than off Cascais in December and 3.6 °C warmer in January and February, using the rounded NOAA 2001–2020 monthly means below [37][38].
- You came to walk. The classified levada and peak trails cost €4.50 per person per route in 2026 (€10.50 for the full PR1), children 12 and under free but booked [22]. See Madeira levadas.
- You want lower rent. idealista’s asking rent for ordinary leases was €16.8 per m² in Funchal and €25.1 in Lisbon in September 2026 [7][8]; furnished monthly lets are a separate market.
- You want a ready-made nomad community. The Digital Nomads Madeira project runs a free workspace in Ponta do Sol [13]. See Madeira for digital nomads.

Furnished monthly lets cost more in both places, and we found no reliable average for either. Sea values use the same NOAA OISST v2.1 Final dataset and 2001–2020 period for both offshore points [37][38].

Sea method: daily NOAA OISST v2.1 Final values at 38.625° N, 9.625° W (Cascais) and 32.625° N, 16.875° W (Funchal). We average each calendar month within each year, then give the 20 annual monthly means equal weight and round once to 0.1 °C. These offshore grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches. Air and rain remain IPMA 1991–2020 [1][2][3][4][37][38].
What the table hides:
- Funchal is the dry, sunny side of Madeira. The mountains and parts of the north side are much wetter, and conditions vary a lot by station; the summits are cold in winter: see Madeira weather by month.
- From November to February Funchal is about 3.5–5.6 °C warmer by day than Lisbon, most in December and January; by March the gap is 1.7 °C [1][2]. That is the main reason to pick Madeira for a winter month.
- In June, July and August Lisbon is the hotter one, by 2–3 °C, and both are nearly dry [1][2]. In September they are level.
Work and internet
Lisbon: Heden sells a full day for €17 including VAT [11]. The crowd-sourced internet average on nomads.com is 101 Mbps [9].
Madeira: Sangha in Funchal costs €15 a day or €150 a month for a hot desk, before VAT [12]; the free Digital Nomads Madeira workspace in Ponta do Sol is open 09:00–18:00 after you register online [13]. Ponta do Sol and Funchal are far apart by bus, so pick one base. The crowd average is 44 Mbps [10].
Neither figure describes a particular flat: ask the host for a speed-test screenshot before you book a month. Both are on UK time all year [31], and both are Portugal, so the same visa rules apply: see Portugal’s digital nomad visa.
Rent for a month
On the same index, Funchal’s asking rent was a third lower than Lisbon’s in September 2026: €16.8 against €25.1 per m², about €840 against €1,255 for 50 m² before bills [7][8]. Numbeo’s one-bedroom in the centre is closer, €1,336 against €1,425 [5][6]. The lease rules are the same: Portugal’s one-year minimum doesn’t apply to a lease for a temporary purpose such as work, if the contract says so [32][36]. In Funchal, new holiday-let registrations stopped in the Sé parish from June 2026; existing licences carry on [33].

With children
- Beaches: Lisbon’s calm family beaches are on the Cascais line, 33–40 minutes by train, with Blue Flags in 2026 [35][18]. Madeira has few sand beaches: Calheta’s is imported sand between breakwaters, Blue Flag in 2026 [18][21]; Funchal’s Lido has two seawater pools open all year [20].
- Days out: Lisbon has the Oceanário (daily 10:00–20:00, children 3–12 €15.50–17.70) [19], the science centre and the zoo. Madeira has short levada walks, free for children 12 and under but booked into a time slot [22], plus gardens and cable cars.
- Hills and drops: Lisbon’s old town is steep and cobbled, Funchal is hilly too, and many levadas have drops or tunnels: pick the short, easy routes with small children. A carrier may be easier than a stroller in both.
Details: Lisbon with kids, Madeira with kids.
Getting around without a car
Lisbon: one €40 Navegante Metropolitano pass covers the metro, buses and the Cascais and Sintra trains for a calendar month [14]. See getting around Lisbon.
Madeira: one fare table covers all bus operators since April 2026; a tourist pass costs €13.75 for a day, €23 for three and €36 for seven, Aerobus included [16]. Funchal and the south-east are the easier bases without a car; farther west, and to the high trailheads, buses are few. See Madeira without a car.
Getting there, and doing both
- From London: about 150 non-stop flights a week to Lisbon and about 31 to Funchal in a Google Flights snapshot viewed on 10 October 2026 [23][24].
- From Prague: TAP and easyJet fly 11 times a week to Lisbon in the snapshot [26], and Smartwings has announced its own Prague–Lisbon route from 23 October 2026; Smartwings had 6 a week to Funchal in the same snapshot [27]. Otherwise change in Lisbon.
- Between the two: TAP, easyJet and Ryanair had about 93 non-stop departures a week from Lisbon to Funchal in the same snapshot, 1 h 40 [25].
- Wind at Funchal: Madeira’s airport works with mandatory wind limits, so flights are sometimes held, diverted or cancelled [28]. Leave a spare day before an onward connection.
More: flights to Lisbon, flights to Madeira.
Taxes and paperwork
- Tourist tax: Lisbon €4 per person per night from age 13, Funchal €2, both for at most 7 nights, so one uninterrupted month in the same taxable accommodation costs an adult at most €28 in Lisbon and €14 in Funchal [29][30]. Other Madeira councils set their own rules: see tourist tax in Portugal.
- Visas and tax: Madeira is part of Portugal; the same visa applies. See Portugal’s digital nomad visa.
Where to stay
- Lisbon: where to stay in Lisbon.
- Madeira: where to stay in Madeira. Funchal for buses, coworking and pools; the south-west with a car.

Quick answers
Is Lisbon or Madeira better?
For a city break, food, museums and nightlife, Lisbon. For nature, walking and winter warmth, Madeira: in January Funchal averages a 20.0 °C high against 15.1 °C in Lisbon, and 6.2 rain days against 10.0 (IPMA 1991–2020). In summer Lisbon is hotter and Madeira milder. Flights from Lisbon to Funchal take 1 h 40, about 93 a week in a Google Flights snapshot of 10 October 2026.
Lisbon or Madeira for a long weekend?
Lisbon if you fly from most of Europe: from London there were about 150 non-stop flights a week to Lisbon against about 31 to Funchal in Google Flights' snapshot of 10 October 2026, the flight is shorter, and the metro reaches the centre in about 20 minutes. Madeira works for a long weekend from London too (fastest flight 3 h 50), but its airport has wind limits, so leave slack before a Monday meeting.
Is Madeira cheaper than Lisbon?
On asking rents for ordinary leases, yes; furnished monthly lets have no reliable average in either place. idealista's asking rent for ordinary leases in September 2026 was €16.8 per m² in Funchal and €25.1 in Lisbon. Numbeo's crowd figure for a one-bedroom in the centre is €1,336 in Funchal and €1,425 in Lisbon. The tourist tax is also lower: €2 a night in Funchal, €4 in Lisbon, both for at most 7 nights of a stay.
Lisbon or Madeira with kids?
Lisbon for city days (the Oceanário, the science centre, the zoo) and calm town beaches in Cascais by train. Madeira for short levada walks (free for children 12 and under, but booked), seawater pools such as Funchal's Lido and a few sand beaches, mostly imported, such as Calheta.
Is Lisbon or Madeira better for digital nomads?
Lisbon has the bigger choice of coworking and the faster crowd-sourced internet average (101 Mbps against 44 on nomads.com). Madeira has an organised community: the Digital Nomads Madeira project keeps a free workspace in Ponta do Sol, and Sangha in Funchal sells a day for €15 plus VAT. Same time zone, same visa.
