Lisbon or Porto for a monthweather, costs, work and kids compared
Lisbon is warmer, drier and bigger, with beaches on a train line and the most coworking choice. Porto is cheaper, greener and wetter, with city beaches and easy day trips north. Side by side with IPMA weather, 2026 transport prices and crowd-sourced costs.

Checked on 9 October 2026. Weather is a 30-year average; costs are crowd-sourced and rough; fares are CP’s 2026 prices.
Short answer: pick Lisbon if you want more sun, a bigger city, the widest choice of coworking spaces and calm beaches on a train line (Cascais, about 40 minutes). Pick Porto if you want lower rents, a smaller city you can walk, city beaches at the end of a bus or metro ride, and easy day trips to Braga, Guimarães and the Douro. In winter Lisbon is drier; in a summer heatwave Porto is cooler.
Pick Lisbon if…
- Sun and warmth matter most. Lisbon averages 75.5 rain days a year and 110.6 days at 25 °C or more; Porto 105.4 rain days and 46.9 warm days [1][2].
- You want choice for work. Aggregators list Lisbon day passes from €15 and dozens of spaces [10]; Second Home at Cais do Sodré is €25 + VAT a day [9]. See working remotely from Lisbon.
- You want the sea every day without a car. Live on the Cascais line and the town beaches are a few minutes from the station; the train to Lisbon takes 33–40 minutes [26]. See where to stay on the Lisbon coast.
- You fly a lot. The metro reaches the centre in about 20 minutes from the airport [15]. Routes compared in flights to Lisbon and flights to Porto.
Pick Porto if…
- Budget matters. On Numbeo, a one-bedroom is about a fifth cheaper than in Lisbon (€1,153 vs €1,425 in the centre) and eating out costs less [5][6]. Porto coworking starts at €15 a day including VAT [11] and hot desks from €50 a month [12]. See working remotely from Porto.
- You like a city at walking scale. The centre is compact, though steep; the beaches in Foz and Matosinhos are inside the city or at the end of metro line A [16]. See where to stay in Porto.
- You want day trips by train. Braga is 56 to 73 minutes and Guimarães 62 to 83 minutes from São Bento on the urban trains [27], and a €7.70 CP day ticket covers both lines [23]; the Douro line reaches Pinhão in about 2 h 20 [24]. See Braga and Guimarães from Porto and the Douro from Porto.
- You don’t like heat. Porto averages 13.0 days a year at 30 °C or more; Lisbon 33.2 [1][2].

IPMA climate normals 1991–2020: Lisboa / Instituto Geofísico (in the city) and Porto / Pedras Rubras (the airport, 11 km north of the centre) [1][2]. Rain days count days with at least 1 mm. More detail: Lisbon weather by month and Porto weather by month.
By season: November brings the most rain by volume in both (133.9 mm in Lisbon, 165.9 mm in Porto) [1][2]. In spring Porto still averages 8.9–10.4 rain days a month from March to May, Lisbon 5.8–7.9. In July and August Lisbon is beach weather and Porto is pleasant city weather with a cold sea.
With children
Lisbon: the Oceanário is open daily 10:00–20:00 [21] and the science centre is next door in Parque das Nações, so a rainy day is solved; calm town beaches in Cascais by train. Families tend to live in Parque das Nações, Campo de Ourique or on the Cascais line. See Lisbon with kids.
Porto: Parque da Cidade is 83 hectares of free park running down to the sea [22]; SEA LIFE and the planetarium cover rainy days; Blue Flag beaches in Foz [18]. Families tend to live in Foz, Boavista or Ramalde. See Porto with kids.
In both cities the old town is steep and cobbled: a carrier beats a stroller.
For remote work
Both cities share the Lisbon time zone (UK time all year). Lisbon has the larger choice of coworking spaces [10]. Porto has fewer, smaller and cheaper spaces, with clusters in Bonfim and Cedofeita. Crowd-sourced internet averages are close (101 vs 93 Mbps) [7][8].
Doing both
The Alfa Pendular takes about 2 h 40 to 2 h 50 between the two (2 h 39 to 2 h 46 from Oriente, add about 9 minutes from Santa Apolónia): for example Lisboa Oriente 10:09 to Porto Campanhã 12:48, the train from Faro that reaches Oriente at 10:05 [19][27]. One-way fares in 2026: €35.70 Turística, €49.90 Conforto [20]. CP’s homepage flags a separate Linha do Norte Alfa Pendular and Intercidades notice for 3 October to 1 November 2026 [25], so check the times for your date. It depends on the season and the budget. Lisbon has more sun and less rain (75.5 rain days a year against 105.4 in Porto, IPMA 1991–2020), more coworking choice and beaches on the Cascais train. Is Porto cheaper than Lisbon?
Yes, on the crowd-sourced figures. Numbeo (6 October 2026) puts a one-bedroom in the centre at €1,153 in Porto against €1,425 in Lisbon, a cappuccino at €2.39 against €2.70 and an inexpensive meal at €12 against €15. nomads.com's own monthly estimate for a nomad is $3,425 in Porto and $4,766 in Lisbon.

Lisbon or Porto with kids?
Both work if you live outside the old town. Lisbon has the Oceanário and the science centre side by side, the zoo, and calm town beaches in Cascais by train. Porto has Parque da Cidade down to the sea, SEA LIFE and the planetarium, Blue Flag beaches in Foz and day trips by train to Braga and Guimarães.
