Short answer: in Portimão, spend a beach day at Praia da Rocha, see the town’s story in the Museu de Portimão in the old sardine cannery (€3, closed on Mondays [1]), take a boat from the marina along the cliffs towards Benagil or up the river, cross the river to Ferragudo, and walk the Alvor boardwalk through the dunes. We haven’t stayed in Portimão; hours, prices and timetables below come from the museum, the councils, the beach registries and the bus operator’s data, read in October 2026.

Praia da Rocha

1. Praia da Rocha. Portimão’s town beach is Praia da Rocha, a wide beach along about 1.5 km of coast [5]. The council describes a boardwalk of about 2.4 km along the sand, a sports area and a playground, and the avenue above it runs to the Marina de Portimão [3]. It held a Blue Flag in 2026, with an official bathing season from 1 June to 30 September [4]. At the river end stands the 17th-century Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, built to guard the mouth of the Arade [5].

If Rocha is too busy, Praia do Vau, towards Alvor, is a smaller town beach, also with a 2026 Blue Flag [4].

The Museu de Portimão

2. The cannery museum. The Museu de Portimão is in the former Feu sardine cannery on the riverside, with a permanent exhibition on the town and its fish-canning industry [2]. Hours and tickets, from the museum’s own site [1]:

Period Tuesday Wednesday to Sunday Closed
1 September to 31 July 14:30–18:00 10:00–18:00 Mondays, national public holidays
August 19:00–23:00 14:00–23:00 Mondays, national public holidays

Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. A ticket costs €3, or €4 combined with the Alcalar megalithic monuments; over-65s and visitors aged 16 to 25 pay €1.50 [1]. The tourism office adds that under-16s go free [2]. On Sundays entry is free for residents of Portugal [1]. A good choice for a rainy or very hot afternoon.

Boat trips from the marina

3. Along the cliffs to Benagil, or up the Arade. The Marina de Portimão, at the end of the Praia da Rocha avenue [3], is a base for boat trips: one operator there, Algarve SunBoat, lists trips to the Benagil caves and river cruises up the Arade to Silves [6]. For Benagil, know the rules before you book: since August 2024 nobody may swim into the cave or land on its beach, motor boats go in for two minutes, and kayak and SUP trips need a guide [7]. How to see it, by boat, kayak or from the clifftop, is in our Benagil cave guide. By car, Benagil is about 17 km and 23 minutes from the riverside museum, without traffic in a routing model [13].

Ferragudo, across the river

4. Ferragudo. On the other bank of the Arade, in Lagoa municipality, Ferragudo is a village about 5 km by road from the museum on Portimão’s riverside [13]. Its beach, Praia Grande de Ferragudo, runs for 1.2 km below the São João do Arade fort, facing Praia da Rocha across the river mouth, and the registry describes its water as generally calmer than Rocha’s [8]. From the river mouth the Caminho dos Promontórios, a 6 km linear coastal path with information panels, follows the headlands and coves towards Carvoeiro [9].

By bus, Vamus line 110 takes 14 minutes from the Guanaré stop in Portimão to Ferragudo: 8 buses on weekdays and 4 on Saturdays and Sundays in October and November 2026, with the last bus back at 19:08 [12].

Alvor and its boardwalk

5. The Alvor boardwalk. West of Portimão, the Passadiços de Alvor are wooden boardwalks through the dunes between Praia dos Três Irmãos and Alvor, beside the Ria de Alvor lagoon [10]. Stay on the boards; at low tide you can look for crabs and limpets on the rocks at Alvor’s point [10]. The boardwalk itself and the full walking route between the two have different lengths; both are on our place page, worth a look before you set off with small children. Praia de Alvor, at the estuary, has a Blue Flag for 2026 [11].

By car it is about 7 km from the riverside museum [13]. Vamus line 51 runs from the Guanaré stop to Alvor in 22 minutes: 6 buses on weekdays, 3 at weekends in October and 2 at weekends from November 2026; the last bus back leaves Alvor at 18:42 (16:42 at weekends from November) [12].

With kids

Portimão has a lot for children within a short drive: Blue Flag town beaches [4], calmer water at Ferragudo [8], and a museum that is free for under-16s [2]. Which beach suits small children, the water park, rainy days and the hospital in town are covered in our Portimão with kids guide.

In autumn and winter

The official bathing season ends on 30 September [4], but the museum stays open all year except on Mondays and holidays [1], the Alvor boardwalk and the Ferragudo coast path work in any season, and the Arade and coast trips depend on the operator and the sea. Buses thin out at weekends, especially to Alvor from November [12]. For a day inland, the hills of Monchique are behind Portimão, and Silves is up the river.

Getting there and where to stay

Portimão has a station on the Algarve line: from Faro, 10 trains on weekdays, 9 on Saturdays and 8 on Sundays in October 2026, taking 61 to 89 minutes [14]. For the Aerobus from the terminal, the train via Faro and the buses on to Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and Alvor, see Faro airport to Portimão and Carvoeiro; for the buses and trains along the coast, the Algarve without a car. For Benagil and the coast paths, a car is easier: Algarve car hire.

Where to stay: Portimão, Alvor, Carvoeiro and Ferragudo are compared as bases in where to stay in Portimão, Alvor, Carvoeiro and Ferragudo. Working while you are here: coworking in Portimão.
