Four bases within 25 minutes of each other. Portimão if you work or travel without a car (coworking, train, hospital); Alvor for small children (estuary beach and lagoon, flat boardwalks); Carvoeiro for cliff walks and Benagil; Ferragudo for a quiet village across the river.

Short answer: stay in Portimão (or Praia da Rocha) if you are working or don’t have a car, Alvor if you have small children, Carvoeiro if you want cliff walks and Benagil on the doorstep, and Ferragudo if you want a small village with Portimão across the river. All four are within about 25 minutes’ drive of each other [17] and about an hour from Faro airport [1]; for buses, trains and taxis from the airport to each of them, see Faro airport to Portimão and Carvoeiro.

Portimão and Praia da Rocha — for work and car-free trips
Portimão is the only real town of the four. It has a station on the Lagos–Faro line [2], the bus to Monchique [15], the hospital [19] and the coworking spaces of this stretch of coast [10][11]. Praia da Rocha, the beach district south of the centre, is a long resort strip with a playground and medical post on the sand [14].
Pick it if: you work most days, you are not hiring a car, or you want everything within walking distance. Skip it if: you want a village feel — Praia da Rocha is an urban beach with intensive use [14].
Alvor — for small children
Alvor sits on the Ria de Alvor estuary. Its beach has broad sand, dunes and a boardwalk, and a beach registry calls the water calm and ideal for families [4]; the official tourism page places the calm channels in the lagoon behind the sand bars [16]. About 6 km of flat boardwalks run through the dunes and salt marsh, which one blog calls stroller-friendly [9].
Pick it if: you have toddlers, or you want flat walks and a quieter base than Praia da Rocha. Skip it if: you plan to rely on trains — there is no station; Portimão is about 9 minutes away by car [17]. We have not checked local bus links yet.
Carvoeiro — for cliffs, walks and Benagil
Carvoeiro’s town beach is a small bay below an amphitheatre of houses [7]. The Algar Seco boardwalk (about 600 m) and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, which starts at Praia de Vale Centeanes, are both east of town [8]; Benagil beach is about 14 minutes away by car [13].
Pick it if: you want to walk the cliffs and kayak to Benagil without a long drive. Skip it if: you need a coworking space — we found none, and Portimão is about 17 minutes away by car [12][17].
Ferragudo — for a quiet village next to the city
Ferragudo is a former fishing village across the Arade river from Portimão, now largely a residential neighbour of the city, with the 16th–17th-century São João do Arade fort above its beach [3]. Praia Grande is 1.2 km long and calmer than Praia da Rocha [5]. A railway stop called Ferragudo is on the Algarve line, but it is in Parchal, about 1.7 km north of the village in a straight line [2][18].
Pick it if: you want a small place with a big, calm beach and the city a short hop away. Skip it if: you want a wide choice of shops, cafés and coworking on foot — that is Portimão.

Quick answers
Is Carvoeiro or Alvor better for families?
For small children, Alvor: a broad estuary beach with a lagoon of calm channels behind the sand bars, and flat boardwalks through the dunes. Carvoeiro's town beach is small and sits in a calm bay, but the area's highlights — cliff walks and Benagil — suit older children better.
Where should a digital nomad stay between Lagos and Albufeira?
Portimão or Praia da Rocha. The verified coworking spaces of this stretch are in Portimão (a city-run space at €10 a day plus VAT and a beachfront one at €16 a day), the city has a train station on the Lagos–Faro line, and you avoid a daily drive. We found no coworking in Carvoeiro.
Can you stay in this area without a car?
Portimão is the realistic choice: it has a train station on the Algarve line and the bus to Monchique. Ferragudo has a railway stop on the same line. Carvoeiro, Benagil and Alvor's inland cafés are much easier with a car.
How far is the central Algarve from Faro airport?
About an hour by car: roughly 54 minutes to Carvoeiro or Portimão and 59 minutes to Alvor, by a routing model without traffic.
