Portimão and Praia da Rocha with kidscalm beaches, rainy days and a hospital nearby
Portimão is one of the easier Algarve bases with children: big lifeguarded beaches, calmer water at Vau, Alvor and Ferragudo, a cheap museum for rainy days, a water park 10 minutes away by car, and a hospital in town. What we checked, with 2026 prices.

Short answer: Portimão works well with children because everything a family needs is close: Praia da Rocha for facilities [1], Praia do Vau, Praia de Alvor or Praia Grande in Ferragudo for calmer water [2][3][4], a €3 museum that is free for under-16s [6], a water park about 10 minutes away by car [7][20], and the hospital a few minutes from the centre [14][15]. The trade-off: Praia da Rocha is a busy resort strip, not a village.
For the rest of the town, the museum hours, boat trips, Ferragudo and the Alvor boardwalk: things to do in Portimão.
Beaches, ranked for small children
Praia do Vau — a 400 m urban beach between Portimão and Alvor. The beach registry describes its water as sheltered and says it attracts families. Blue Flag in 2026, accessible [2].
Praia de Alvor — a broad estuary beach with dunes and a boardwalk; the registry calls its water calm and ideal for families. Blue Flag in 2026, accessible [3]. The official tourism page puts the calm channels in the lagoon behind the sand bars [21], so on the sea side check the flag as anywhere else.
Praia Grande, Ferragudo — 1.2 km across the river from Praia da Rocha, with water described as calmer than Rocha’s. Blue Flag in 2026, accessible [4].
Praia da Rocha — the big one: over a kilometre of sand with a playground on the beach, a medical post, toilets and showers, according to the municipality [1]. Best for older children and for days when you want everything within reach.
All four had lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September in 2026 [5]. Outside those dates there is no lifeguard season — plan as if no one is watching.
Rainy or too-hot days
- Museu de Portimão — in the former Feu sardine cannery on the riverside. Outside August it opens Tuesday 14:30–18:00 and Wednesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00; in August it opens in the afternoon and evening (Tuesday 19:00–23:00, Wednesday–Sunday 14:00–23:00). Closed Mondays. Adults €3, under-16s free [6].
- Slide & Splash — a water park on the EN125 at Estômbar, Lagoa. 2026 prices at the gate: adults €32, children from 1 m tall up to 10 years €24 (€35 and €27 in July–August); online tickets are 10% cheaper but tied to a date; children under 1 m go free [7][8]. The 2026 price periods run from April to October, but we could not confirm the opening calendar — the homepage showed 10:00–17:00 and “every day except Sundays” when we checked [8]. Check the dates before you go.
Outdoors without the beach
- Alvor boardwalks — flat boardwalks through the dunes and salt marsh between the Alvor lagoon and Praia dos Três Irmãos, about 6 km in total. One blog calls the route stroller-friendly; there is no shade [9][10]. At low tide, children can look for crabs and shells on Alvor’s rocky point [9].
- A boat trip from Marina de Portimão — for example Algarve SunBoat’s quiet electro-solar boats to the Benagil caves or up the Arade river [11]. On Benagil trips everyone wears a life jacket for the whole visit, by law [12]. Check minimum ages when you book.
- Monchique for a cooler day — the mountain town is about half an hour inland; see our Monchique day-trip guide.
Health care
- Hospital de Portimão (Estrada do Poço Seco) is about 3 minutes by car from the centre, 11 minutes from Alvor and 20 minutes from Carvoeiro (routing model, no traffic) [14][15].
- The Algarve’s paediatric emergency services are at the hospitals in Portimão and Faro; in late 2024 weekend cover had to be reorganised between them [13]. Call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 for advice first [16], and 112 in an emergency.

Travel insurance for long stays
A European health card (EHIC, or the UK’s GHIC) covers state healthcare, not everything. For a long stay, check whether a policy covers you for the whole trip, pre-existing conditions, and sports like surfing. We don’t sell or recommend specific policies.
Working while the family is at the beach
If one parent needs a desk, Portimão has two options a short walk from the beaches:
- Rocha Beach House on the Praia da Rocha seafront — €16 a day or €55 a week [17].
- Portimão Cowork Space, run by the city in the old fish market — €10 a day plus VAT, during tourist-office hours, with a registration form and an ID [18].
More in our guide to working remotely in Portimão.
Getting around
A car makes the calmer beaches and Ferragudo much easier. Without one, Portimão is the transport hub of the area: buses run inland to Monchique [19], and a taxi covers short hops. Arriving by air, see Faro airport to Portimão and Carvoeiro for the Aerobus, the train via Faro and what runs late.
