Short answer: in Tavira, take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira for a beach day, walk the old town from the Ponte Romana up to the castle, see the town from inside the Camera Obscura, and give half a day to Santa Luzia and Praia do Barril and an evening to Cacela Velha. On the timetable valid from 7 September 2026, the ferry from the town pier runs hourly [1]. We haven’t stayed in Tavira; the timetables and hours below come from the operators and the council, read in October 2026.

The town itself, its climate and working from it are in our Tavira guide.

Ilha de Tavira: the ferry and the beach

1. Take the boat to the island. Tavira’s beach is on Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island about 11 km long with four beaches; the one facing the town is called Praia da Ilha de Tavira [9]. Silnido runs two ferry routes to it; neither current timetable prints exceptions for particular days of the week:

Route Timetable from Departures to the island Last boat back Adult return
Town pier (Tavira-Centro) 7 Sep 2026 hourly, 09:30 to 18:30 19:00 €2.70
Quatro Águas 1 Oct 2026 09:00, 10:00, then every 30 min to 13:30; break; 15:00 to 18:00 every 30 min; 18:45 19:00 €2.00

Sources: [1][2]. Children aged 4 to 11 pay €1.15 (town) or €1.10 (Quatro Águas) return; babies up to 3 travel free [3]. Quatro Águas is about 3 km east of the centre by road (routing model) [16], so the town pier is simpler on foot; Quatro Águas has more departures. The summer 2026 timetable was no longer online when we checked, so for June to August check the operator’s page before you go.

On the island the council lists restaurants, a first-aid post, toilets and a campsite, and notes the beach is not adapted for reduced mobility [4]. Its 2026 bathing season, with lifeguards, ran from 1 June to 30 September [5].

The old town

2. Cross the Ponte Romana. The seven-arch pedestrian bridge over the Gilão joins the two halves of the old town. Despite the name, its present form comes from a rebuild in 1655–57; a flood damaged it badly in 1989 and it was restored by the end of 1992 [6]. The 1887 market hall, the Mercado da Ribeira, is on the riverfront just downstream [6]; the working market is the municipal market.

3. Climb to the castle. The Castelo de Tavira is a small walled garden on the hill above Praça da República, a National Monument since 1939 [6]. From the walls you look over the town, the river, the Ria Formosa and the salt pans [7]. The council gives summer hours of 08:30–19:00 every day and publishes no winter hours [6], so check them before you go between October and March.

4. See the town in the Camera Obscura. Next to the castle, the 1931 water tower now holds a camera obscura: a guide projects a live image of Tavira in a dark room for about 30 minutes, in Portuguese and English. The operator lists Tuesday to Friday, 11:00 to 14:00 (last show 13:30), closed on holidays and on cloudy or rainy days; adults pay €6.50, children 4 to 12 €3, and it is not suitable for children under 4 [8]. Because it depends on the sun, phone before you walk up.

Santa Luzia and Praia do Barril

5. Santa Luzia. West of Tavira, Santa Luzia is a fishing village that calls itself the octopus capital [10]; its modernist church of 1958 replaced a 16th-century chapel that served the fishing families [11]. From Santa Luzia, boats cross the lagoon to Terra Estreita, the quieter part of the island; the operator’s 2026 timetable runs from 23 May to 30 September only [21], so outside summer use the bridge at Barril instead.

6. Praia do Barril, by footbridge and beach train. Next to Santa Luzia, at Pedras d’El Rei, a footbridge crosses the lagoon, and from there you walk about 1 km or take a small train to Praia do Barril [12]. On the beach, rows of rusting anchors from the old tuna fishery, the “anchor cemetery”, stand in the sand [12]. The council lists Barril as an accessible beach, with an adapted train that takes wheelchairs and pushchairs [12]. Pedras d’El Rei confirms the train, but its beach page gives no operating dates or winter timetable (checked 11 October 2026); ask the resort before relying on it [22].

Getting there: about 7 km from the old bridge by road, 11 minutes without traffic [16], or Vamus 105, Tavira (Terminal Rodoviário) ↔ Pedras d’El Rei, 15 minutes each way. Checked on 12 October for every day of 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November 2026: 6 buses each way on Monday–Friday, from Tavira 08:10–18:10 and back 08:30–18:25. Allow for the 4 h 05 departure gap, 13:05–17:10 outward and 13:20–17:25 back; the gap before each last bus is one hour. No buses are scheduled on the checked weekends, including 1 November. The operator’s full timetable has business-day columns only, excluding public holidays; summer-school-holiday columns show 9 through buses each way, with dates to check before travel [24][25]. These bus times do not confirm the beach train’s operation.

Cacela Velha

7. A half day in Cacela Velha. About ten kilometres east of Tavira [17], Cacela Velha is a walled hamlet on a rise above the eastern end of the Ria Formosa: narrow streets, whitewashed houses, a small fortress and the church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, built in 1518 [17][18]. The village also has an excavated Islamic quarter and a Christian necropolis [18], and from Sítio da Fábrica below it boatmen take you across to the beach [17][18], Praia da Fábrica. By car it is about 12 km, 15 minutes without traffic in a routing model [16]. By train, Cacela station is 12 to 16 minutes from Tavira, with 16 trains a day on weekdays, 13 on Saturdays and 12 on Sundays in October 2026 (last train back to Tavira 20:46) [19]; the station is about 2.2 km north of the village in a straight line [20], so add a walk.

With kids

The island ferry is cheap for children and free under 4 [1][2][3], Barril has the adapted beach train in season [12], and the Camera Obscura takes children from 4 [8]. Child fares by beach, the deer park at Mata da Conceição, rainy-day options and health care are in our Tavira with kids guide.

In winter

In October 2026 the ferries from the town pier and from Quatro Águas run on their autumn timetables, last boat back 19:00 [1][2]; we found no separate winter timetable, so check the operator’s page from November. What changes is the island: the bathing season, and with it the lifeguards, ends on 30 September [5], the Barril train’s operating hours need checking with the resort [22], bus 105 has no scheduled weekend service in the three checked weeks above [24][25] and you should confirm the Santa Luzia crossing directly with the operator before planning a winter visit [21]. Plan a winter day around the old town, the castle in daylight, Cacela Velha and a walk across to Barril. Monthly temperatures and rain are in our Tavira guide.

Getting there and where to stay

For 12–18 October 2026, Regional trains take about 32–37 minutes from departure in Faro to arrival in Tavira, and 31–38 minutes in reverse. InterRegional takes about 27 and 35 minutes respectively. Together the two categories provide 16 trains each way on working weekdays, 13 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday; the PDF assigns public holidays to Sunday service. There are roughly two-hour gaps at weekends. The PDF’s Tavira times are departures: its 33–44-minute differences from Faro include the stop in Tavira, which the journey times above exclude. For example, Faro 07:00 reaches Tavira at 07:32 and leaves at the printed 07:33. Checked 12 October; confirm your travel date [26]. From the airport into Faro, and onwards by bus, see the Algarve without a car. For Cacela Velha and Barril on a weekend, a car is easier: Algarve car hire.

Where to stay: the centre if you come without a car, Quatro Águas for the shortest crossing, Santa Luzia for Barril. Compared area by area in where to stay in Tavira.

    Quick answers

How do you get to Ilha de Tavira?

By Silnido ferry, from the town pier or from Quatro Águas, about 3 km by road east of the centre. From 7 September 2026 the town boats leave hourly from 09:30 to 18:30 (last boat back 19:00); from 1 October 2026 Quatro Águas has departures at 09:00 and 10:00, then every 30 minutes to 13:30, again every 30 minutes from 15:00 to 18:00, and at 18:45 (last back 19:00). Neither timetable prints exceptions for particular days of the week. An adult return costs €2.70 from town and €2.00 from Quatro Águas.

Is the Praia do Barril train running in winter?

Check with Pedras d'El Rei for your date. Its beach page confirms the train but does not give operating dates or a winter timetable (checked 11 October 2026). The beach is about 1 km from the footbridge, so you can walk. For 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November 2026, checked 12 October, Vamus 105 has six buses each way on Monday–Friday and none on the checked weekends. Public holidays are excluded by the operator’s business-day timetable. The return from Pedras d’El Rei has a 13:20–17:25 gap and a last departure at 18:25; confirm the timetable for other dates.

What can you do in Tavira in one day?

On a Tuesday to Friday, start with the Camera Obscura (shows from 11:00, last at 13:30, weather permitting), the castle garden next to it and the old bridge; have lunch in town; then take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira for the afternoon (last boat back 19:00). With a car, add Cacela Velha, 12 km east, a walled hamlet above the lagoon.

How do you get from Tavira to Cacela Velha without a car?

By train to Cacela station, 12 to 16 minutes from Tavira: 16 trains a day on weekdays, 13 on Saturdays and 12 on Sundays (October 2026), the last one back at 20:46. The station is about 2.2 km north of the village in a straight line, so add a walk at each end.
