Viewpoint in Tavira
Ponte Romana (Ponte Antiga), Tavira
Seven-arch pedestrian bridge over the Gilão linking the two halves of the old town; despite the 'Roman' name the current form dates from a 1655–57 rebuild (research).
- Address
- Ponte Romana, between Praça da República and Rua 5 de Outubro, Tavira (OSM)
- Hours
- Public pedestrian bridge, open at all times (OSM: highway=pedestrian).
OK with kids
Car-free bridge (mapped as a pedestrian way in OSM) between the main square and the cafés on the other bank; the parapets are low enough to keep an eye on climbers (research, not first-hand).
The notes
The old bridge is the pedestrian crossing of the Gilão river in the middle of Tavira, between Praça da República and the east bank. It is the natural start or end of an old-town walk and the place most photos of Tavira are taken from. Families can walk it with a pushchair; the ‘Roman’ label is local tradition rather than the documented history.
What we found (research)
- Classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público. [cm-tavira.pt, page modified 19 Mar 2026]
- The first written references are in the 13th-century chronicle of the conquest of the Algarve; the municipality notes the common local belief that the Romans built it. [cm-tavira.pt]
- Around 1600 there were houses on the deck; a medieval octagonal tower defended the south end until it was demolished in 1883. [cm-tavira.pt]
- After a collapse in 1655 it was rebuilt by 1657, giving it its present form of seven arches. [cm-tavira.pt]
- The flood of 3 December 1989 badly damaged it; restoration lasted until the end of 1992. [cm-tavira.pt]
