Checked on 4 October 2026. Lifeguard dates and Blue Flags are for the 2026 season. Beach lengths come from the official bathing-water profiles. We have not visited every beach on this list for this page, and it does not pretend we have.

The short answer

The west coast of the Algarve, the Costa Vicentina, runs north from the cape at Sagres to Odeceixe on the Alentejo border. Its beaches face the open Atlantic. They are wider, wilder and windier than the south-coast coves, and the official profiles give north to north-west as the usual wind at every one of them [3]–[10].

  • With children: Odeceixe and Amoreira, where a river meets the sea and you can swim in calmer water beside the surf [3][4][11].
  • Learning to surf: Amado and Arrifana, both official surf beaches with schools nearby [6][8][13].
  • Experienced surfers: Castelejo, Cordoama and Tonel, closest to Sagres [9][10][17].
  • A big beach with room to walk: Bordeira at Carrapateira, with dunes and a stream [7].

All of them are lifeguarded only from 1 June to 30 September in 2026 [1].

Blue Flags: ABAE 2026 list [2]. Distances: our calculation from OSM coordinates [16]. The road is always longer.

Best for children: the river beaches

Praia de Odeceixe. The northernmost Algarve beach is a 330 m stretch of golden sand under fractured schist cliffs. To the north it is bounded by the mouth of the Seixe river, where lagoons form [3]. Algarve Tips calls it a horseshoe [11]. For small children the river side matters: you can paddle in still water a few metres from the Atlantic surf. One travel-guide listing describes a car park at the beach with a short, flat walk to the sand [14]. Lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September 2026, and a 2026 Blue Flag [1][2].

Praia da Amoreira. A smaller beach of 110 m at the mouth of the Aljezur river, with cliffs and dunes [4]. Algarve Tips says you can swim in the sea or in the river [11]. Same lifeguard season, and a Blue Flag in 2026 [1][2].

Praia de Monte Clérigo. A 350 m beach backed by big dunes, with a rocky platform to the south [5] and rock pools [11]. It is not a river beach, but there is a small village with restaurants, which helps on a full day out with children [11].

A caution that applies to all three: the rivers move with the tide (the tidal range here is 3.4–3.5 m [3]), and the sea next to them is open Atlantic. Swim inside the lifeguarded zone and season.

Best for learning to surf

Praia do Amado. The official profile says Amado is “famous for its waves” and good for surfing and bodyboarding [8]. It is the teaching beach of several Sagres-area schools when the west coast is working. The beach is short, with a 100 m bathing frontage [8]. It has no Blue Flag in 2026, but it is lifeguarded in season [1][2].

Praia da Arrifana. A 350 m cove under high cliffs, next to a small fishing harbour, with “good conditions for surfing and bodyboarding” [6]. The Surf Atlas lists it with Mareta and Martinhal as a mellow beach break for beginners [13]. The 2026 Portaria also lists Arrifana as a praia de uso limitado, a beach with limited use, and does not explain why [1].

When does the west coast suit beginners? Sagres Natura, a local surf camp, says that in summer, with a swell under about 1–1.5 m, “the west coast is fun for every surfer”. Paradoxically, a big south swell of 2 m or more makes ideal beginner conditions along the west coast [12]. In a big north-west swell the west coast is for experienced surfers only, and the schools move to the south side of Sagres [12]. Take a lesson rather than guessing; see our Sagres surfing guide.

Best for experienced surfers, close to Sagres

Praia do Tonel. Right in Sagres, between the fortress and the village, and west-facing [17]. It has a 2026 Blue Flag and is also a praia de uso limitado [1][2]. Details on the Tonel page.

Praia do Castelejo and Praia da Cordoama. Two wide beaches under high cliffs, side by side north of Vila do Bispo, each with a temporary stream and each officially good for surfing and bodyboarding [9][10]. Both have 2026 Blue Flags [2]. The Surf Atlas says Cordoama is “very rarely busy” [13]. Castelejo is also listed as uso limitado for 2026 [1].

Praia do Beliche is the exception on this list. It is on the cape road but faces south, so it often works when the west coast is too big [17]. It has steep steps and strong currents and no 2026 Blue Flag; see the Beliche page before taking children [2].

Best for space: Bordeira

Praia da Bordeira at Carrapateira is where the Bordeira stream reaches the sea through dunes, between cliffs of schist, greywacke and limestone [7]. The official bathing frontage is only 200 m [7], but the sand around it is much bigger. The Surf Atlas notes it is one of the more reliable west-coast spots in summer [13]. One travel blog describes two car parks: a lower one past the O Sítio do Rio restaurant and an upper one on the cliff road [15]. No Blue Flag in 2026; lifeguards in season [1][2].

Wind, water and timing

  • Wind. Every profile on this page gives north to north-west as the usual wind direction [3]–[10]. It blows straight along or onto much of the coast. If the forecast shows strong north wind, the south side of Sagres (Beliche, Mareta, Martinhal) is the usual escape [12][13].
  • Waves. The official mean wave height is about 1 m at all of them [3]–[10]. That is an average, and winter swells are far bigger.
  • Water temperature. The offshore point south-west of Sagres averages 15.7 °C in February, 20.6 °C in September and 20.3 °C in October [19]. This is regional context, not a measurement at each west-coast beach.

Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Sagres 36.875° N, 9.125° W [19]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast.

  • Lifeguards. 1 June – 30 September 2026 at every beach here [1].

What we’d do

From Sagres without children, we would pick by the forecast: Castelejo or Cordoama when the swell is small, and back to the south side when it is big. With children, we would drive the extra distance to Odeceixe or Amoreira for the river water, and plan it as a full day. With a beginner surfer in the family, we would book a lesson and let the school choose between Amado and the south coast [12].

    Quick answers

Which west coast Algarve beach is best for children?

The two river-mouth beaches. At Odeceixe the Seixe river forms lagoons at the north end of the beach, and at Amoreira the Aljezur river meets the sea, so there is calmer water next to the surf (APA bathing-water profiles 2026; algarvetips.com). Both have lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September 2026 and a 2026 Blue Flag.

When are west coast Algarve beaches lifeguarded?

In 2026 the bathing season at all the beaches on this page runs from 1 June to 30 September (Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1, anexo I). Outside those dates there are no lifeguards.

Which west coast beaches have the Blue Flag in 2026?

Odeceixe-Mar, Amoreira-Mar, Monte Clérigo and Arrifana in Aljezur, and Cordoama, Castelejo and Tonel in Vila do Bispo, are on ABAE's 2026 list. Amado, Bordeira and Beliche are not (bandeiraazul.abae.pt, accessed 4 Oct 2026).

Where can beginners surf on the west coast of the Algarve?

Surf schools around Sagres use the west coast in small to medium summer swell and when a big south swell arrives; Amado and Arrifana are the usual west-coast teaching beaches, and Surf Atlas lists Arrifana as a mellow beach break for beginners (sagresnatura.com; thesurfatlas.com, updated 10 Oct 2025). Check the day's conditions with a school first.

Is the water cold on the west coast of the Algarve?

We do not have beach-level measurements for this coast. As regional context only, the NOAA OISST 2001–2020 point south-west of Sagres averages 15.7 °C in February and 20.6 °C in September. It does not measure Arrifana or every west-coast beach.
