Sagres with kidsbeaches, wind, health care and what to do

Sagres with children works best around one calm beach (Martinhal), one sheltered town beach (Mareta) and a plan for windy days. Which beaches to skip with small kids, where the nearest 24-hour care is, and day trips that work for families.

Short answer: Sagres is a good place for children who like beaches, wind and open space, and a hard one for children who need indoor entertainment. Base your days on Praia do Martinhal (calm and shallow, but windy) [1] and Praia da Mareta (the Blue Flag town beach) [2][3], skip Praia do Beliche with small children [5][6], and keep a plan B for windy days – usually a trip to Lagos.

The beaches, ranked for small children

Praia do Martinhal is the beach sources describe as having calm, shallow water and being much appreciated by families – and also as having constant wind, which is why windsurfers and kitesurfers use it [1]. It had a Blue Flag in 2026 [3].

Praia da Mareta is the town beach, classed by the environment agency as an urban beach with intensive use [2], with a Blue Flag in 2026 [3]. Being walkable from the centre matters more with children than any other feature.

Praia da Ingrina, about 20 minutes by car in a routing estimate checked on 11 October 2026 [27], is the calmest water near Sagres in the sources: the environment agency describes “a small bay of calm waters”, and it was lifeguarded with a Blue Flag in 2026 [21][4][3]. It is small, with a beach restaurant and limited parking, and a car is useful [22].

Praia do Tonel, between the fortress and the village, is described as a surfers’ beach [20]. Good for watching surfers and for older children in lessons; less obvious for toddlers.

Praia do Beliche is beautiful and the wrong choice with small children: sources call it not recommended for children because of strong currents, and it is reached by about 100 steep steps [5][6].

Mareta, Tonel, Martinhal and Beliche were lifeguarded from 1 June to 30 September in 2026 (Ingrina too [4]); Tonel and Beliche were also listed as “limited use” beaches, with no reason given in the regulation [4]. Outside those dates no lifeguard season is scheduled, so plan as if no one is watching.

The offshore Sagres monthly average is 15.7 °C in February, 15.7 °C in March and 20.6 °C in September [26]. Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Sagres 36.875° N, 9.125° W [26]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast.

Wind: plan for it

Wind is the thing that shapes a family day in Sagres. The Martinhal beach is described as constantly windy [1], and the headland at Cabo de São Vicente is described as busy and windy, with a jacket recommended [8].

What we would do: check the wind forecast the evening before, go to the beach in the morning, and keep a sheltered alternative ready.

Things to do that are not the beach

  • Fortaleza de Sagres – the 15th-century fortress on the headland, open 09:30–17:30 with last entry at 17:00, standard ticket 10 € [7]. It has toilets, and most of the site is passable with a stroller, though bumpy [8].
  • Cabo de São Vicente – the lighthouse on the cape, west of the village; go for the view and keep children well back from the cliff edges [8].
  • A boat trip from the harbour – Mar Ilimitado runs 1h30 dolphin-watching trips from Porto da Baleeira, open to children from age 3; check the current adult and child prices before booking; guides are marine biologists [23]. Operator’s listing checked 11 October 2026; bookings and sea conditions determine availability.
  • Surf lessons for children – Algarve Surf School lists kids’ lessons for ages 6–12 at €65, outside August–September [25]. Other schools are in our surfing guide.
  • A day in Lagos – 35 minutes by car [14]. The Zoo de Lagos opens 10:00–19:00 from April to September and 10:00–17:00 from October to March [18]; the Ciência Viva science centre opens 10:00–18:00, daily from April to September and Tuesday to Sunday from October to March, with free entry for under-6s and a €15 family ticket [19].

Childcare and family resorts

The Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort runs kids’ clubs all year for ages from 6 months (nursery) up to 17 (Blast Club), with heated pools, children’s menus and a baby concierge that lends equipment such as cots and sterilisers [9][10]. It is the only on-site childcare option we found in Sagres. The FAQ does not say whether the clubs take children who are not staying at the resort, what they cost or which hours they cover – ask before you plan work around them. See where to stay in Sagres for the alternatives.

Health care

This is the part to know before you arrive:

  • Sagres health post (Rua Joaquim Maurício) is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 09:00–16:00 and Tuesday and Thursday 13:30–16:00, closed at weekends; the main health centre in Vila do Bispo opens weekdays 09:00–17:00 [11].
  • The nearest 24-hour unit is the basic emergency service at Hospital Terras do Infante in Lagos [12], about 33 km and 35 minutes by car [14].
  • Paediatric emergency for the Algarve is at the hospitals in Portimão and Faro; in late 2024 the region had to reorganise weekend paediatric cover between the two [13]. Portimão is about 58 km and 52 minutes from Sagres [15].
  • For advice by phone, the national health line SNS 24 is 808 24 24 24 [16]. In an emergency, call 112.

Getting around with children

A car makes Sagres with children much easier: the calm beach, the cape and Lagos are all a drive away, and the bus to Lagos runs only a handful of times a day. See our guide to Sagres without a car.

There is little to do indoors, and the nearest 24-hour emergency unit is in Lagos, about 35 minutes away by car.

Which beach in Sagres is best for small children?

Praia do Martinhal is the one sources describe as calm, shallow and much appreciated by families, though windy. Praia do Beliche is described as not recommended for children because of strong currents and about 100 steep steps.

        When are Sagres beaches lifeguarded?

In 2026 the bathing season at Mareta, Tonel, Martinhal and Beliche ran from 1 June to 30 September (Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1). Outside those dates there are no lifeguards.

Where is the nearest hospital to Sagres?
