East vs west Algarvewhich side to base yourself on

The western Algarve (Lagos, Sagres) is cliffs, coves, surf and the bigger remote-work scene. The eastern Algarve (Faro, Olhão, Tavira) is lagoon and barrier-island beaches reached by ferry or footbridge, with a shorter trip from Faro airport. How to pick, with sources.

Short answer: go west (Lagos, Sagres) for cliffs, coves, surf and the Algarve’s remote-work scene. Look east (Faro, Olhão, Tavira) for long sandbar beaches reached by ferry or footbridge, the regional capital and two railway towns, and a short trip from Faro airport. For surf or coworking, the west; for a family week near the airport, the east is worth a serious look – with the caveats below. We spent about a year on the western side over three years; the eastern side here is what our research found.

The two halves, in one table

Compared West – Barlavento East – Sotavento
Towns Lagos, Sagres, Aljezur on the west coast Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António
Coast Cliffs, coves, sea stacks; Atlantic west coast with surf Ria Formosa: barrier islands and lagoon along about 60 km from Ancão to Manta Rota [2]
Getting to the beach Walk or drive to a cove Mostly by ferry or footbridge to an island
Sea in August 19.9 °C offshore south-west of Sagres [16] 21.9 °C offshore near Tavira [15]
From Faro airport by car Lagos ~85 min, Sagres ~1 h 50 (model) [6][7] Faro city is closest; Tavira ~53 min (model) [5]
Remote work Paid coworking in Lagos (day pass €16) [11], coliving in Sagres Fewer options found in our research; see Faro for remote workers
Rent, 1-bed centre (Numbeo, long-term, crowd-sourced – not a furnished monthly let) Lagos €1,037.50/month [13] Faro €912.50/month [12]; no figure for Tavira or Olhão

The names come from the wind: Barlavento is the windward west, Sotavento the leeward east – although Wikipedia notes the historical origin of the division is uncertain [1].

Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Sagres 36.875° N, 9.125° W [16]; Tavira 36.875° N, 7.625° W [15]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast.

Month by month for both halves: Algarve weather by month.

Choose the west if…

  • You surf, or want to learn. The west coast and Sagres face Atlantic swell from two directions; our Sagres guide and west coast beaches cover where.
  • You want a ready-made remote-work routine. Lagos has a coworking space with published prices [11] and plenty of laptop-friendly cafés (Lagos coffee).
  • You want the postcard Algarve – Ponta da Piedade, the cove beaches, cliff walks.

This is the side we know. Sagres is a village of under 2,000 people [14]; Lagos is the town with the services.

Choose the east if…

  • You have small children and want short transfers. Under an hour from the airport, a short ferry as the day’s outing, and at Barril an accessible beach with an adapted train and ramps – see Tavira with kids. Water conditions and shade we could not verify.
  • You want to be near the airport. Faro city is the closest base; Tavira is under an hour away by car in the routing estimate [5].
  • You want a town rather than a resort. Faro is the regional capital and has a university; Olhão and Tavira are railway towns on the lagoon with markets and historic centres. How busy they feel in August we cannot tell you.
  • You want day trips into Spain. Seville is about two hours from Tavira by car (model estimate) [8].

The trade-off: fewer coworking options in what we found, and beach days that run to a ferry timetable that changes by season. Our Ria Formosa islands guide lists the ferries.

Without a car

Both halves are on the same railway. CP’s timetable effective from 19 July 2026 includes through trains between Vila Real de Santo António and Lagos without changing in Faro; check that your chosen service runs through [9][17]. Olhão and Tavira are useful railway bases in the east; Lagos is the western terminus, while Sagres has no railway.

Train times checked for 12–18 October 2026: these are approximate minutes from departure at the origin to arrival at the destination, with Regional (R) and the once-daily InterRegional (IR) shown separately [9][17].

Route Regional out / back InterRegional out / back
Faro → Olhão / Olhão → Faro 9–10 / 9 min 9 / 9 min
Faro → Tavira / Tavira → Faro 32–37 / 31–38 min 27 / 35 min
Faro → Lagos / Lagos → Faro 90–108 / 86–95 min (90–95 back on Sunday) 77 / 82 min

CP’s PDF gives intermediate departure times: subtracting its printed Faro and Tavira times gives 33–44 minutes on Regional trains, including time standing in Tavira. The arrival-based range above excludes that stop; for example, the 17:15 train reaches Tavira at 17:51:30 and leaves at 17:59:30 in CP’s timetable data [9][17].

Full-price adult Regional singles in CP’s tariff effective from 19 July 2026 are €1.60 Faro–Olhão and €3.60 Faro–Tavira; InterRegional fares differ [10]. Fares checked on 12 October 2026; check the current timetable and fare before travel.

Doing both

For a first two weeks, what we would plan: one week in the east near the airport (Tavira or Olhão), then the train or a hire car west to Lagos for the second. Day-by-day plans for 5, 7 and 10 days: Algarve itinerary. For the checked week, Faro to Lagos takes about 1 h 17 on the daily InterRegional and 1 h 30 to 1 h 48 on Regional trains. The full-price adult Regional single is €8.30 in the tariff effective from 19 July 2026; check the current CP timetable and fare before travel [9][10][17].

    Quick answers

Is the east or west Algarve better?

Neither overall. The west (Lagos, Sagres) suits surfers, people who want the cliff coast and remote workers who want coworking and a community. The east (Faro, Olhão, Tavira) suits people who want to stay close to Faro airport and anyone who prefers island beaches reached by ferry. We lived on the western side; the eastern side is researched.

What is the difference between Barlavento and Sotavento?

They are the traditional names for the two halves of the Algarve: Barlavento is the west and Sotavento the east. Wikipedia attributes the names to the prevailing wind along the south coast, while noting that the historical origin of the division is uncertain.

Is the water warmer in the east Algarve?

In August, the NOAA OISST 2001–2020 offshore average is 21.9 °C near Tavira and 19.9 °C south-west of Sagres. That compares two offshore grid cells, not all beaches along either coast.

Which part of the Algarve is closest to Faro airport?

Faro city is closest, followed by Olhão and Tavira. By car Tavira is about 43 km from the airport (roughly 53 minutes in a routing estimate), Lagos about 90 km (roughly 85 minutes) and Sagres about 122 km (roughly 1 h 50).
