The notes
What the sources say (research)
- About 1.5 km of bay from the breakwater in the north to Castelo do Queijo in the south; the breakwater and rock patches soften the swell, so summer and autumn often bring small, easy waves. “The go-to spot for most of the local surf camps.” [The Surf Atlas, Feb 2025]
- The same guide mentions water pollution problems in recent years. Praia de Matosinhos is not on ABAE’s 2026 Blue Flag list, though it is an official bathing water with a 13 June–13 September season. [The Surf Atlas; ABAE; Portaria 204-A/2026]
- Several surf schools teach here, including Linha de Onda, which offers lessons for beginners, children and families. [linhadeonda.pt] Prices not checked.
- Matosinhos is a separate municipality about 8 km from Porto’s centre, on metro line A (blue), which runs every 12–15 minutes. [Wikipedia: Matosinhos; Porto Metro]
