Beach in Lagos

Praia do Camilo

Pedestrian access to Praia do Camilo is closed due to an unstable slope and stairs (CM Lagos, 6 Oct 2026). APA also says not to bathe; do not use the stairway. Reopening date unconfirmed.

Hard with kids

Pedestrian access is prohibited because the slope and stairs are unstable, and APA says not to bathe (official updates, 6–8 Oct 2026). Do not take children onto the closed stairway. Research — not first-hand.

The notes

Current access warning (checked 14 October 2026): do not use the stairs or enter the sea at Praia do Camilo. Lagos council said on 6 October that pedestrian access remained closed because the slope supporting the stairway was unstable. It signed an agreement to rebuild the access, but announced no reopening date. APA’s bathing-restrictions page, updated 8 October, says “NÃO TOMAR BANHO” for Camilo because of unstable access. The beach’s listing in the 2026 bathing-season regulation does not lift these later restrictions. [CM Lagos, 6 Oct 2026; APA, 8 Oct 2026]

What the sources say (research)

  • Small beach between cliffs with rock formations, shaped like a shell. [CM Lagos beach page, read 2 Oct 2026, text undated]
  • Historic access: a long stairway from the viewpoint on Estrada da Ponta da Piedade. The undated tourism page still describes it as renovated, but the stairway is closed under the later 2026 safety notices. [CM Lagos beach page; CM Lagos, 6 Oct 2026]
  • Access regulation (Aviso n.º 254/2024): access to the sand at Dona Ana and Camilo is exclusively via the existing stairways, which the regulation describes as particularly long and markedly winding, wide enough only for users without bulky equipment to pass each other safely. [CM Lagos Aviso 254/2024, 23 Jul 2024]
  • The 2024 access regulation restricts bulky watersports equipment on the stairs during the bathing season. Its normal access rules do not override the current closure. [CM Lagos Aviso 254/2024; CM Lagos, 6 Oct 2026]
  • Regulation art. 5 (2024): the bathing season is fixed yearly by Portaria; failing that it runs 1 June – 30 September. [CM Lagos Aviso 254/2024]
  • Qualified as “praia de banhos” on the April 2026 list, with a bathing season of 1 June–30 September. This formal designation predates the access closure and APA’s June bathing restriction; it is not evidence that visitors may enter or swim. [Portaria 204-A/2026/1; APA, 8 Oct 2026]
  • Listed in the “Praia de uso limitado” column for 2026 (Decreto-Lei 159/2012, art. 11.º n.º 2); the Portaria does not state the reason. [Portaria 204-A/2026/1, anexo I (DR 1.ª série n.º 84, supl., 30 Apr 2026)]
  • Not on the Blue Flag 2026 list. [ABAE galardoados 2026]. ABAE’s Camilo page shows season data for 2019 only. [ABAE local page]
