Pontal da Carrapateira is the headland that juts out between Praia da Bordeira to the north and Praia do Amado to the south, next to the village of Carrapateira [5]. You can treat it two ways: as a short drive to a clifftop viewpoint, or as a half-day circular walk.
The short version. Partly paved roads loop around the headland, and there is parking near the viewpoint [1]. From there you look over both beaches and the open Atlantic. Birdwatchers rate it one of the best places in the Algarve for seabirds [1].
The walk. One guide describes the circular route as part of the waymarked Rota Vicentina network [2]; the Rota Vicentina site lists a circular route called “Carrapateira Cliffs” (no. 20), probably this one, but its details did not load for us [4]. Lengths differ by source: about 8 km and three hours by one guide [2], 6.6 miles (about 10.6 km) with roughly 160 m of ascent and 2.5–3 hours by AllTrails [3] — likely different start points or variants. The terrain is mostly level or gently rolling with a few short climbs, but it is exposed, with little shade and unfenced clifftops [2]. Carrapateira has cafés and a minimarket at the start [2].
Who it suits. A good day off for a nomad or a workation week without a beach plan; families with older children who walk. With small children, drive to the viewpoint instead and keep them close at the edge [1][2].
Check before you go: the official route length and waymarking on the Rota Vicentina site (route 20, “Carrapateira Cliffs”), which we could not read automatically; wind forecast.
