The notes

The ruined fort above Arrifana is the place to see the whole bay from above. It stands on a steep headland about 70 metres above the sea and was built in 1635 to defend the bay and a tuna fishery that had worked here since 1516 [1]. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, it declined in the late 18th century and was fully abandoned by 1861; today it is a ruin [1].

The view. Down onto the surf beach, along the cliffs to the Pedra da Agulha sea stack, and out over the lineup — AlgarveTips rates it as quieter than the main clifftop lookouts [2]. Wikipedia describes it simply as an excellent viewpoint over the Costa Vicentina and one of the most visited spots in the municipality [1].

Who it suits. Everyone, briefly. We’d treat it as a short stop before or after the beach, a sunset spot for a nomad staying in Arrifana, a history-in-five-minutes for kids. It is a cliff edge, so hold small children’s hands.

Getting there. On foot from the clifftop above the beach [2]. Parking and any opening arrangements were not found in a reliable source.

Check before you go: whether the site is fenced or has set hours; parking.
