In detail

The notes behind this page

Short answer: Tenerife is two islands in one. The south-west (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos) is the dry, sunny resort coast with sheltered beaches, the easy choice for a family beach week or winter sun. The north (Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz, La Laguna) is greener, cooler and cloudier, with towns where people live all year and lower room prices. Teide sits in the middle and is reachable from both by bus. For a working month, Tenerife works, but Las Palmas on Gran Canaria has the bigger nomad scene; see Gran Canaria vs Tenerife.

Tenerife: quick answers

Is the north or the south of Tenerife better?

For a beach week with small children or guaranteed-feeling winter sun, the south: Tenerife South airport records 15.2 rain days a year against 64 at Tenerife North (AEMET 1981–2010). For a town with year-round residents, lower room rates and green landscapes, the north: Puerto de la Cruz averaged €82.60 a night in 2025, against €159.20 in Adeje (Turismo de Tenerife).

How touristy is Tenerife?

Very, in places. In 2025 Tenerife received 7.56 million tourists from abroad and mainland Spain, and holiday homes made up 49% of its 266,480 registered tourist beds (Turismo de Tenerife). Tourism is concentrated: Adeje had 95 hotel and apartment beds per 100 residents, while Santa Cruz had 1.3 and La Laguna 0.4.

What is the weather like in Tenerife in winter?

On the south coast, mild and mostly dry: an average high of 21.7 °C in January at Tenerife South airport, under 2 rain days and a sea of about 20 °C. The north is cooler and wetter, and at 632 m the north airport has an average daily high of only 16 °C in January (AEMET 1981–2010).

Do you need a car in Tenerife?

Not to stay in one resort or town: TITSA buses run from both airports, to Teide, and between the main towns, with day passes of €10 in the Ten+ app. A car helps to combine north and south or reach small beaches and villages.
