In detail

The notes behind this page

Short answer: El Médano is the south of Tenerife for people who want wind and a village rather than a resort. It has the island’s best-known kite and windsurf beaches, a long grey-sand town beach under the red Montaña Roja volcano, and it is 12 minutes by road from the south airport. Its municipality (Granadilla) has far fewer registered tourist beds than Adeje’s, which is not the same as measuring the village itself, but the wind that brings the kiters also blows across the beach.

How touristy is it

  • Granadilla de Abona had 905 registered hotel and apartment beds in December 2025 for 58,752 residents, about 1.5 per 100. Adeje had 47,690 for 50,021. [Turismo de Tenerife, Balance 2025; Wikidata/INE]
  • Holiday rentals are not in those figures, and the figures are for the whole municipality, so they do not measure El Médano itself. [es-Wikipedia, rev. 3 Oct 2026]
  • The tourist board describes the seafront as cosmopolitan, with surf shops, restaurants and cafés. [webtenerife.com, 9 Oct 2026]

Beaches and wind

  • Playa de El Médano: 750 m of grey sand by the official count (es-Wikipedia gives about 2 km for the whole town beach). The end near the village is the family end with smaller waves; the far end is the windsurf and kite zone. Blue Flag on the tourist board’s page, but see the place page. [webtenerife.com; es-Wikipedia]
  • Playa El Cabezo: the tourist board calls it one of the best beaches in Europe for windsurfing and kitesurfing and a venue of the World Windsurf and Kitesurf Championship. [webtenerife.com, 9 Oct 2026]
  • Montaña Roja: a 171 m volcanic cone in a 166 ha special nature reserve (since 1994), with a small sheltered cove beside it; the promenade leads to the trails. [webtenerife.com; es-Wikipedia]

Working from here

  • We found no coworking in El Médano with a published price that we could verify. OpenStreetMap tags a “Vagabonds community” as coworking, but its website describes a decentralised nomad community and lists no desks or prices, and the OSM point is about 5 km west of the village, so we leave it out. [openstreetmap.org node 10969868692; vagabonds.undervan.me, 9 Oct 2026]
  • The nearest coworking we verified is in Fañabé, Costa Adeje, about 21 minutes away by car (model): Coworking Costa Adeje.
  • Internet: no local figure. nomads.com’s 36 Mbps is a crowd average for the whole island. [nomads.com, Oct 2026]

Weather

  • Tenerife Sur airport, 8 km away in the same municipality (AEMET 1981–2010): mean daily max 21.7 °C in January, 28.4 °C in August; 132 mm of rain over 15.2 days a year. [AEMET C429I]
  • AEMET’s normals do not include wind. Locally the town is described as windy most of the year. [es-Wikipedia, rev. 3 Oct 2026]

Getting here and around

  • Tenerife South airport: 8.4 km, about 12 minutes by road (model). Costa Adeje: 25 km, 21 minutes. Teide National Park: 51 km, 54 minutes. [OSRM]
  • By bus from Tenerife South airport there is no direct line: take TITSA line 111 (every 30 minutes) or line 10 (about every 40 minutes) to the San Isidro bus station, 3 to 6 minutes, and change to line 408, which runs from San Isidro to El Médano in 7 to 12 minutes, about every 20 to 30 minutes from about 08:00 to 20:00 and less often early and late; on the Wednesday we counted there was a gap from 13:12 to 14:45 with one trip in between. Line 470 links El Médano with Los Cristianos. Times from TITSA’s timetable data, counted for Wednesday 14, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2026; check before you go.
