In detail

The notes behind this page

Short answer: Maspalomas is Gran Canaria’s holiday coast, and it is honest to say so. Together with Playa del Inglés it holds about 63% of the island’s hotel and apartment beds, so you get what a big resort does well: a long sandy beach, the dunes, water parks, buses from the airport and plenty of places to eat. You do not get a town with its own life outside tourism. For a family week of sun it works. For a month of remote work or a feel for real Canarian life, Las Palmas is the better base, and quieter, smaller Puerto de Mogán is half an hour west.

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés: quick answers

Is Maspalomas very touristy?

Yes, by design. In September 2025 the Playa del Inglés–San Agustín and Maspalomas tourist zones had 68,063 hotel and apartment beds between them, 63% of the island's hotel and apartment beds (ISTAC via Gran Canaria Tourism). The whole municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has 54,291 residents (INE, 1 Jan 2025).

Is Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés better for families?

They are one stretch of coast with one long beach. Playa del Inglés has the most hotels, shops and the wide beach the tourist board recommends for small children; Meloneras, at the western end by the lighthouse, is quieter and the most expensive (average room rate €215.60 in September 2025, against €108.25 in Playa del Inglés).

How do I get from Gran Canaria airport to Maspalomas?

Global bus line 66 runs from the airport to Faro de Maspalomas (€4.05; €3.50 to Playa del Inglés, per Aena). By car it is about 37 km and 32 minutes (OSRM model). From Las Palmas by day take line 30 (direct from Santa Catalina, every 20 to 30 minutes) or 50; line 5 runs only early in the morning and in the evening and night.

Can you work remotely from Maspalomas?

Yes, but it is a resort, not a nomad hub. Ocean Working in Meloneras lists desks from €20 a day or €180 a month, open Monday to Friday 8:00–19:30 (operator site, Oct 2026). For a longer working stay with more choice, Las Palmas is an hour away.
