In detail

The notes behind this page

Short answer: Lanzarote is the island for a quiet, warm beach week or a winter month with children, as long as you are happy with a resort town or a small capital. It is dry (111 mm of rain a year at the airport), winter highs sit around 21 °C, and the three resorts, Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise, all have beaches the tourist board rates as calm water and marks for families. Sea and wind change by the day, so check the flags. The volcanic landscape is the reason to go beyond the beach, but inside Timanfaya the volcano route is by the centre’s bus, not your car, and the lava-tube sites are not pushchair territory.

Where to base yourself

Base Municipality Why Watch out
Puerto del Carmen Tías Long Playa Grande with lifeguards; 18 min from the airport; direct bus 161 The busiest resort: more tourists than residents in the municipality
Playa Blanca Yaiza Calm Playa Dorada and Flamingo; Papagayo coves; ferries to Fuerteventura 36 min from the airport; more visitors than residents
Costa Teguise Teguise Las Cucharas with lifeguards; close to Arrecife (bus line 1) Breezier: a windsurf beach
Arrecife Arrecife The real town: 70,000 residents, few tourists, city beach Not a resort; the council runs a daily lifeguard service at El Reducto

How touristy is it

  • In 2025, the Cabildo estimates an average of 82,217 tourists on the island on any given day, for 166,878 residents. [Centro de Datos Lanzarote, 12 Mar 2026]
  • They are concentrated: Tías (Puerto del Carmen) had 28,407 tourists a day for 21,671 residents and Yaiza (Playa Blanca) 28,405 for 18,698. Arrecife had 2,431 for 70,265. [Centro de Datos Lanzarote]

Families

  • Beaches the tourist board rates as calm and marks for families (conditions vary; keep children within reach in the water): Playa Grande (lifeguards, toilets), Playa Dorada, Playa Flamingo, Las Cucharas (lifeguards, windy). [Turismo Lanzarote, 9 Oct 2026]
  • Famara is the surf and kite beach with strong waves: one to watch, not to swim with small children.
  • The island’s art and tourism centres (CACT) are free for children 0–6. No pushchairs at Jameos del Agua or Cueva de los Verdes; Timanfaya recommends a baby carrier. [CACT, 9 Oct 2026]
  • Hospital: Hospital Dr. José Molina Orosa in Arrecife, about 13 minutes by road from Costa Teguise, 16 from Puerto del Carmen and 36 from Playa Blanca (model). It has an emergency department and a paediatrics service; we found no official page naming a separate children’s emergency service. Working from here

  • We found no coworking with a price published by the operator that we could check tonight. Directories list The Square Coworking in Arrecife, but we found no operator page with prices, and third-party price lists are not enough. [holaislascanarias.com; coworkingspain.es, 9 Oct 2026]

  • Cafés: a remote worker living on the island names Amelie & Friends in the Arrecife marina for reliable Wi-Fi (one source, late 2024; check before you go). The same guide says few official coworkings exist, so cafés fill the gap. [coworksurf.com, 10 Oct 2026]

  • No official internet speed figure. Ask your host for a speed test.

  • Rentals: Canary law 6/2025 makes advertising a holiday home without its registration number an offence; see the Canary Islands for digital nomads. Over 31 days you need a temporary-housing lease (Royal Decree-law 29/2026, since 8 Oct 2026): monthly rentals in the Canary Islands.

  • Visa and practicalities for Spain: digital nomad visa, eSIM, paying in Spain.

Lanzarote: quick answers

Is Lanzarote good for families?

On official data, the three resorts have what families usually look for: calm-water beaches marked for families, lifeguards at the main beaches of Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, and short transfers (Puerto del Carmen is about 18 minutes by road from the airport). The volcanic sights are free for under-7s, but the two lava-tube sites do not allow pushchairs.

Do you need a car in Lanzarote?

Not if you stay in one resort and use the beach: Intercity Bus Lanzarote runs line 161 from the airport to Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, and line 1 between Arrecife and Costa Teguise. For Timanfaya, Papagayo and the north a car is far easier. At Timanfaya you drive to the Islote de Hilario car park; the route through the volcanoes is by the centre's bus.

How warm is Lanzarote in winter?

At the airport, average highs are 20.7 °C in January and 21.8 °C in December, with lows of 14–15 °C and about 3–4 rain days a month (AEMET 1981–2010). The sea is around 19 to 20 °C (NOAA satellite averages). Warm enough for walks and beach days, cool for long swims.

Which is the least touristy base in Lanzarote?

Arrecife, the capital: on the Cabildo's 2025 estimate it had about 2,400 tourists on an average day for 70,000 residents, against more visitors than residents in Tías (Puerto del Carmen) and Yaiza (Playa Blanca).
