In detail

The notes behind this page

Short answer: Fuerteventura is the Canary island of beaches and wind. Pick Corralejo in the north if you want the most services, the coworkings, a frequent bus and dunes and beaches next to town; pick the south (Costa Calma, Morro Jable) for very long beaches and the Sotavento kite lagoon, at the cost of a 1 hour transfer. It is mild rather than hot in winter (about 21 °C by day in January) and the wind that kiters come for also blows across the beach.

Fuerteventura: quick answers

Is Fuerteventura good for families?

It has what families usually look for: long shallow beaches, calm coves such as La Concha in El Cotillo, a zoo in the south and boat trips to Isla de Lobos. The tourist board calls it a quiet island. The catch is wind, which makes some beaches uncomfortable for small children, and the distances: the south is 65–84 km from the airport.

Where is the best place to stay in Fuerteventura without a car?

Corralejo. It has the most services and a frequent bus: Tiadhe line 06 to Puerto del Rosario every 15 to 30 minutes by day from Monday to Saturday, about hourly in the evening and on Sundays (€3.40), with a ferry to Isla de Lobos and to Lanzarote from the harbour. Caleta de Fuste is the other option, close to the airport on line 03.

Is Fuerteventura good for kitesurfing and windsurfing?

Yes. The tourist board names Flag Beach in Corralejo for all levels and Sotavento in the south, whose lagoon behind a sand bar suits beginners when it is full (only around spring tides) and which hosts a PWA world championship each year. It says winds are stronger and more constant in spring and summer.

How warm is Fuerteventura in winter?

Mild rather than hot: about 20.6 °C by day and 14.7 °C at night in January at the airport (AEMET 1981–2010), with the sea at about 19 °C in January and 18.4 °C in February (NOAA satellite averages 2001–2020). Compare the islands month by month in our warmest-island guide.

How do you get to Fuerteventura?

By air to Fuerteventura airport (FUE) on the east coast, in Puerto del Rosario municipality, or by ferry from Playa Blanca on Lanzarote to Corralejo. The airport is 39 km from Corralejo (about 40 min), 8 km from Caleta de Fuste, 65 km from Costa Calma and 84 km from Morro Jable.
