The notes behind this page
Jávea in short
Jávea (Xàbia in Valencian) is a town of 30,642 people (INE, 2025) on the easternmost point of the Marina Alta, between the Montgó mountain, Cap de Sant Antoni and Cap de la Nau. It has three centres: the historic centre inland, the port (Duanes de la Mar) and the Arenal beach area. It suits a family that wants one easy beach plus coves to explore, more than anyone who wants to live car-free.

Things to do
The Cap de Sant Antoni viewpoint and windmills, Granadella and its summer access rules, the Arenal, Portitxol, the old town and boat trips: hours, prices, a day with kids and what works without a car are in things to do in Jávea.
Beaches: one sandy, the rest coves
- El Arenal: about 480 m of coarse sand and shallow water, “the town’s only sandy beach”, with a playground, pedal boats and a promenade. Blue Flag 2026 (won back after losing it in 2025). In September 2026 it had lifeguards daily to 30 September.
- Cala Granadella: a 160 m pebble cove with very clear water, Blue Flag 2026. In 2026 a barrier controlled access daily from 2 June to 13 September and at weekends and holidays until 12 October; parking (€9 a day, 130 spaces) was paid daily to 6 September and at weekends to 27 September; a tourist train ran from Urbanización La Guardia from 3 July to 13 September.
- La Barraca / Portitxol: 900 m of pebbles facing Portitxol island, good for snorkelling; 59 parking spaces on the same paid calendar as Granadella, and no public transport.
- La Grava also has a 2026 Blue Flag. Primer Muntanyar is a 2 km stretch of gravel and sandstone between the river and the Arenal.
With children
- The town hall suggests two easy walks of about an hour from the Creu del Portitxol viewpoint (Cap Prim and Cala Barraca), kayak hire and glass-bottom boat trips.
- Storytelling (conta contes) every Friday of the school year at 17:30 in the municipal library.
- The Soler Blasco museum in the historic centre has underwater archaeology from the Jávea coast; closed Mondays.
- Health: the Centro Sanitario Integrado in Jávea has 24-hour urgent care; the reference hospital is the Hospital de Dénia. In an emergency, call 112. More in healthcare in Spain for travellers.

Getting there and around
- From Alicante airport: ALSA’s airport–Jávea route calls at Alicante, Benissa, Teulada and Benitachell; bus times, fares and taxi options are in Alicante airport to Benidorm, Altea and Calpe. Who flies into Alicante: flights to Valencia and Alicante.
- By car: the coves are easier with one; see driving in Spain for the rules.
- Local buses: Autocares Carrió and Autocares Venturo (timetables on the town hall’s transport page).
- No TRAM: the nearest line 9 stations are in neighbouring towns.
- By boat to Dénia: 50 minutes round Cap de Sant Antoni, from €12 (Mundo Marino), free for under-4s. See Dénia.
Where to stay and what it costs
- Arenal: the sandy beach, playgrounds and summer amusements on the doorstep; the obvious family base, busy in summer.
- The port (Duanes de la Mar): the fish market and the Comboi coworking on Avenida del Puerto; a working-week base.
- Historic centre: the market, the Thursday street market, the museum and the 24-hour health centre; inland, so the beach is a bus or car ride away.
- Rents: Fotocasa put Jávea at €16.62 per m² a month in the first quarter of 2026, dearer than Dénia (€14.78), as reported by Cadena SER.
- Tourist flats: on 28 May 2026 the town initially approved a plan change to regulate tourist flats and suspended, for one year, new permits for tourist flats in apartment buildings across the municipality (DOGV, 11 June 2026). The suspension names apartment buildings only.
- Markets: a weekly market on Thursdays in Plaza de la Constitución, the Mercat Municipal in the historic centre, and the fish auction at the port on weekday afternoons.
Jávea (Xàbia): quick answers
Is Jávea good for families?
Yes, with one beach doing most of the work: El Arenal is shallow, sandy, has a playground and pedal boats, and won back its Blue Flag in 2026. The other famous beaches, Granadella and Portitxol, are pebble coves for snorkelling, with paid, limited parking in summer.
Does Jávea have sandy beaches?
One: El Arenal, about 480 m of coarse sand with shallow water, is 'the town's only sandy beach' in the town hall's words. The coves (Granadella, La Barraca/Portitxol) and Primer Muntanyar are gravel, pebbles or sandstone.
Is there coworking in Jávea?
Yes. L'Espai Comboi near the port charges €30 a day or €175 a month with VAT included; Coworking Jávea lists an unlimited plan at €149 + VAT a month (its site footer is dated 2020, so confirm it is open); the Sun and Co. coliving sells a 30-day community pass with coworking for €295.
Can you get to Jávea without a car?
Partly. ALSA's Alicante airport route calls at Jávea, there are local buses, and a 50-minute boat runs to Dénia in season. But there is no TRAM in Jávea and no public transport to La Barraca cove, so many families will want a car.
