Where to stay

Areas of Granada, and who they suit

Typical rent€776 / month1-bedroom flat in the centre. Crowd-sourced figure, treat it as an order of magnitude.

  1. Centro (Plaza Nueva, Gran Vía, cathedral)

    Recommended

Flat streets, buses and the shortest walk to the Alhambra paths and the Albaicín; the practical base with luggage or a stroller (our judgement from the map, not first-hand).

  2. Albaicín

    Fine

The views and the old Moorish quarter, but steep, cobbled lanes; harder with a stroller or suitcases (our judgement from the map, not first-hand).

  3. Realejo

    Fine

Below the Alhambra hill to the south of the centre, within walking distance of both (our judgement from the map, not first-hand).

In detail

The notes behind this page

Granada is a city of about 234,000 people at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, built on hills: the Alhambra on one, the old Moorish quarter of the Albaicín on the other, and a flat centre between them. Most visits are planned around a timed Alhambra ticket, so book that first. It is cooler than Seville in summer evenings and much colder on winter nights, and since October 2025 cars with neither a DGT environmental label nor a Granada tax address are fined for driving into almost the whole city.

The Alhambra in short

The Alhambra is the reason most people come: palaces, fortress and gardens on the hill above the centre. Entry to the Nasrid Palaces is at the time printed on your ticket, and tickets sell out in busy months, so it is the first thing to book. Everything about buying tickets is in Alhambra tickets.

Working from Granada (research)

Granada has several coworking spaces with published prices and a specialty-coffee scene in the centre and the Albaicín; Wi-Fi in cafés is something we could not confirm from the operators themselves. See the places above. Time zone: Central European Time.

With kids (research)

  • Alhambra children’s tickets: see Alhambra tickets.
  • The paediatric emergency department at Hospital Materno-Infantil (Virgen de las Nieves) is open 24 hours for children up to 14. [huvn.es, 10 Oct 2026]

Getting around by car (research)

Granada’s low-emission zone covers 23.55 km², practically the whole built-up city, and runs 24 hours a day, every day. It has been enforced with fines since 1 October 2025. A car may enter if it has a DGT environmental label (B, C, ECO or 0) or a tax address in Granada; the ones kept out are cars with neither, which in general means petrol cars from before 2001 and diesels from before 2006. The ring road (GR-30), the Ronda Sur, Merced Alta and Avenida Santa María de la Alhambra, the road up to the monument, are outside the zone. [movilidadgranada.com, updated 28 May 2026] Hire cars in Spain normally carry a label; we found no rule for foreign-registered cars without one, so check before you drive in. More: driving in Spain.

Granada: quick answers

How many days do you need in Granada?

Two days: one built around your timed Alhambra visit, one for the Albaicín, the cathedral area and the Sacromonte. A third day lets you add the Parque de las Ciencias with children or a slower day. Our plan: things to do in Granada.

Can I drive into Granada's low-emission zone?

Only if the car has a DGT environmental label (B, C, ECO or 0) or is registered for tax in Granada. The zone covers 23.55 km², practically the whole built-up city, operates 24 hours every day and has been enforced with fines since 1 October 2025. The ring road (GR-30), the Ronda Sur and Avenida Santa María de la Alhambra, the access road to the monument, are outside it. Hire cars in Spain normally carry a label; we found no specific rule for foreign-registered cars, so check before driving in.

Is there a tourist tax in Granada?

No. As of 10 October 2026 Andalusia has no tourist tax, regional or municipal. The idea is being debated in the Andalusian parliament, so check before you book.

How do I get from Granada airport to the city?

A bus line links the airport with the city centre, 17 km away, stopping at the bus station, Gran Vía de Colón and Paseo del Violón; the full ride takes about 45 minutes, according to Aena. Fares are published by the Granada transport consortium; check before you fly.

Do I need to book the Alhambra in advance?

Yes. Tickets are timed for the Nasrid Palaces and sell out in busy periods, so book the Alhambra first and plan your Granada nights around it. Prices, the official sales channel and what to do if it is sold out: our Alhambra tickets guide.
