In detail

The notes behind this page

Barcelona and the Costa Brava are one trip with two speeds: a big city with beaches inside it, and a rocky coast of small towns and coves that starts about 60 km north-east. This page is not a Barcelona city guide. It answers two questions: where to base a family or a work month, and whether to live on the coast and commute in.

Where to base yourself

Base What it is In one line Page
Barcelona City, 10 districts Base in a residential neighbourhood (Gràcia, Poblenou, Sant Antoni), not the old town Barcelona
Sitges Beach town 35 km south-west 17 beaches, R2 Sud train to the city in 30 to 45 minutes Sitges
Castelldefels Beach town next to the airport Long Blue Flag beach, 23 minutes to Sants on a city ticket Castelldefels
El Masnou Small Maresme town north-east Blue Flag beach by the station, 26 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya El Masnou
Mataró Capital of the Maresme Lowest rents of the commuter towns, R1 every 8–15 minutes on weekdays, about 42 minutes Mataró
Girona Provincial capital, 99 km north-east Old town, parks, cheaper rents; about 40 minutes to Barcelona by high-speed train, beaches by bus or car Girona
Tossa de Mar Costa Brava resort with a walled old town Town beach under the medieval walls; bus to Barcelona Tossa de Mar
Calella de Palafrugell Former fishing village on the Costa Brava Small coves joined by a coastal path; the quietest base here Calella de Palafrugell

Choosing between them: where to stay in Barcelona and on the coast covers the city neighbourhoods and the commuter towns; Costa Brava: where to stay compares Girona with the coast towns.

Barcelona and the Costa Brava: quick answers

Should a family base itself in Barcelona or on the coast?

Barcelona if the city is the daily plan: parks, museums, the aquarium and city beaches. Sitges or a Maresme town if the beach is the daily plan and Barcelona the day trip; Sitges is 30 to 45 minutes by train. Girona if you want the Costa Brava without living in a resort: about 40 minutes to Barcelona by high-speed train. Our where-to-stay guides compare them.

How much is the tourist tax in Barcelona in 2026?

From 1 April 2026 the total per person per night is €9.50 in a tourist apartment, €8.40 in a 4-star hotel and €12 in a 5-star hotel, charged for up to seven nights in the same place. In the rest of Catalonia, outside the towns with their own surcharge, it is €1.75 for a tourist apartment (Agència Tributària de Catalunya).

Is Barcelona good for remote work?

Yes for coworking: day passes from about €20 + VAT (MOB) to €24.20 (betahaus) and €25 + VAT (OneCoWork) on operator sites in October 2026. The crowd-sourced internet figure on nomads.com is modest at 39 Mbps average, and it rates the city very expensive for accommodation.
